    Preview: Clemson at Syracuse

    Gracenote
    Oct 10, 2017

With quarterback Kelly Bryant wearing a walking boot following Clemson’s win over Wake Forest last week and a short week looming, the Tigers had reason for concern. Bryant returned to practice Monday, though, and coach Dabo Swinney expects him to start when the No. 2 Tigers travel to Syracuse for an ACC matchup Friday night.

Bryant injured his ankle during the third quarter of Clemson’s 28-14 home win over Wake Forest last Saturday - the Tigers’ 11th straight win and 37th in 39 games. Clemson has an open date next week before a tough stretch in which they’ll face Georgia Tech and Florida State at home with a trip to North Carolina State sandwiched between. "We've had a tough little stretch here through the first six games and got another one this week,” Swinney told reporters. “We're looking forward to the open date afterward, but our focus is really on trying to empty our tank this week and sprint into this open date and play our best game Friday night.” Clemson has won all four meetings since Syracuse joined the ACC, including a 54-0 rout last season, but the Orange have made a huge turnaround from a year ago - especially on defense - and are coming off a 27-24 win over Pittsburgh.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Clemson -22.5

ABOUT CLEMSON (6-0, 4-0 ACC): The Tigers have been remarkably balanced on offense, averaging 237.3 rushing yards and 233.7 passing yards per game. Bryant is the catalyst, as he leads the team with 401 rushing yards and seven touchdowns while completing 67.3 percent of his passes for 1,259 yards and four scores. Clemson’s defense has been even better, ranking fifth in the nation in scoring defense (11.3 points per game) and eighth in total defense (264.3 yards per game).
ABOUT SYRACUSE (3-3, 1-1): The Orange have returned to respectability on defense, allowing 24.3 points per game after giving up 38.6 per contest a year ago. That improvement, combined with a potent offense that ranks 32nd in the nation in total yards (466.8 per game), makes Syracuse a dangerous opponent. Quarterback Eric Dungey ranks in the top five nationally in total offense (354.5 yards per game) and has a pair of experienced and accomplished receivers in Steve Ishmael and Ervin Phillips, who have combined for 356 receptions in their careers.

    EXTRA POINTS
    1. Clemson has won 12 straight road games, the longest streak in program history and tied for the second-longest active streak in the nation.
    2. Syracuse is 2-6 all-time against defending national champions with wins over Penn State in 1987 and Michigan in 1998.
    3. Clemson WR Hunter Renfrow has made 12 of his 29 receptions on third down, and 10 of the 12 have resulted in conversions.

    PREDICTION: Clemson 33, Syracuse 17

Where: California Memorial Stadium, Berkeley, California

        Preview: Washington State at California

        Gracenote
        Oct 10, 2017

Off to its first 6-0 start since 2001, No. 9 Washington State looks to avoid a letdown Friday on the road against a California team that has lost three in a row. The Cougars are tied with Washington atop the Pac-12 North standings following back-to-back wins over USC and Oregon, while Cal is looking to regroup after being held to 93 yards of total offense in last Saturday’s 38-7 loss to the Huskies.

Quarterback Luke Falk has thrown for 19 touchdowns with just two interceptions for Washington State, which played its first road game last Saturday and held Oregon almost 40 points under its season average in a 33-10 win over the Ducks. Known for their Air Raid offense, the Cougars have been just as impressive on defense, ranking sixth in the nation in passing defense (allowing 146.3 yards per game), tied for seventh in sacks (3.5 per game) and eighth in passing efficiency defense (99.97). The numbers don’t bode well for a Cal team that has been outscored by an average of 20.7 points in losses to USC, Oregon and Washington. “We just, across the board, have got to be better,” first-year coach Justin Wilcox told reporters. “It’s hard right now. We’re sitting at 3-3, we’ve lost three in a row, we haven’t played well enough. We’ve got to be better.”

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Washington State -14

ABOUT WASHINGTON STATE (6-0, 3-0 Pac-12): With tackle Hercules Mata’afa drawing double teams against Oregon, linebackers Frankie Luvu, Hunter Dale and Jahad Woods combined for 26 tackles and two sacks. The Cougars are last in the Pac-12 in rushing due largely to the team’s prolific aerial attack, but Gerard Wicks, James Williams and Jamal Morrow have been a quietly effective trio out of the backfield. If Saturday’s game is close late, give the edge to Cougars senior kicker Erik Powell, who was named the Pac-12 special teams player of the week after connecting on all four of his field goals against the Ducks, including a career-long 52-yarder and a 47-yarder.

ABOUT CAL (3-3, 0-3): Wilcox said changes could be in store after the Bears recorded just one play longer than 15 yards and allowed eight sacks in the dismal showing against Washington. Junior quarterback Chase Forrest could share playing time Saturday alongside starter Ross Bowers, who was 11-of-18 for 80 yards against the Huskies and has been sacked 17 times over the last three games, including seven times last week. While the Bears’ offense is in disarray, the defense continues to show steady improvement with linebacker Devante Downs (Pac-12-high 60 tackles) leading the way.

        EXTRA POINTS

        1. Cal leads the all-time series 46-27-5, but Washington State posted a 56-21 victory in Pullman last season.

        2. Washington State linebackers Isaac Dotson and Nate DeRider could be unavailable Saturday after both exited last week’s game due to injury.

        3. Cal’s defense ranks second to last in the Pac-12 in passing yards allowed (1,584).

PREDICTION: Washington State 44, Cal 17

NCAAF opening line report: Big early wagers moving Week 7 pointspreads
            Patrick Everson

"The early bettors jumped all over the opener of Cougars -12.5, moving the number quickly up to 14.5."

No. 9 Washington State Cougars at California Golden Bears (+12.5)

Washington State is unbeaten, already taking down previously perfect Southern California in Week 5, then ripping another good Pac-12 outfit in Week 6. The Cougars (6-0 SU, 4-2 ATS) went to Oregon as a 1.5-point favorite and hammered the Ducks 33-10.

California (3-3 SU and ATS) got out of the gate with three consecutive SU victories, then had a good showing in a home loss to USC. But the Golden Bears haven’t been able to keep up the past two weeks, losing at Oregon 45-24 as a 17-point underdog, then 38-7 at Washington catching 28.5 points.

“Washington State’s thrashing of Oregon last weekend was one of the biggest college winners of the weekend for the public,” Mason said. “This week, the early bettors jumped all over the opener of Cougars -12.5, moving the number quickly up to 14.5. It’s looking like the house will be rooting against Washington State again. Just 32 percent of the early bettors are taking the points.”

At one point, the line reached 16, before settling back to 14.5 late Sunday night.

                  Week 7

                  Friday’s games
Clemson QB Bryant (ankle) will probably play here, but Tigers have bye next week, so they’re not going to put him in harm’s way here, if they can help it. Clemson is 4-0 vs Syracuse in ACC play after LY’s 54-0 beatdown (565-277 TY); they’ve won 37-27 (-30.5), 49-14 (-14) in two trips to central NY. Tigers have road wins at Louisville/Va Tech by 47-21/31-17 scores; they’re 6-9 in last 15 games as a road favorite (2-0 this year). Under Babers, Syracuse is 1-4 vs spread as a home underdog; their losses this year are by 7-9-8 points (2-0 vs spread as an underdog).

Washington State is off wins over USC/Oregon, has to guard against letdown here; Coogs hammered Cal 56-21 (-16.5) LY, after losing 10 of previous 11 meetings with the Golden Bears. Wazzu lost five of last six visits to Berkeley (dogs 4-2 vs spread). WSU is 6-0, winning 33-10 at Oregon in only road game; they’re 2-4 as road favorites under Leach. Cal lost 45-24 to Oregon two weeks ago; they lost last three games, allowed 83 points in last two. Golden Bears covered their last three games as a home underdog- under is 3-1 in their last four games.

                      Preview: Yankees at Astros

                      Gracenote
                      Oct 12, 2017

The New York Yankees already stared down four elimination games in the postseason and knocked off the American League's top seed with a Game 5 victory over the Cleveland Indians in the AL Division Series on Wednesday, and things are not getting any easier. The Yankees will try to avoid falling into another quick hole when they visit the Houston Astros for Game 1 of the AL Championship Series on Friday night.

New York's hero in Game 5 of the ALDS turned out to be shortstop Didi Gregorius, who homered twice off probable AL Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber and went 3-for-4 in the clinching game after going 1-for-13 in the first four games of the series. "Now that I'm here, being in this unbelievable, unbelievable organization, everything, all the history and everything that's been here with the team, and guys are helping each other, backing each other up, everybody is protecting each other, it's the best thing because everybody is together and the team is really united," Gregorius told reporters. The Yankees (241) were the only team in the AL to hit more home runs in the regular season than the Astros (238), who have been sitting around since polishing off a four-game victory over the Boston Red Sox in the ALDS on Monday and are happy to hold homefield advantage over New York. "The Indians won over 100 games and had the best record in the American League, but I don't think that means anything," Houston shortstop Carlos Correa told MLB.com. "It doesn't mean they're the toughest opponent. The Yanks are tough, as well, as they just proved, coming back from a 2-0 deficit to beat the team with the best record in the AL. That's huge for them. They bring momentum into the series. It's just good to start at home."

                      TV:
                      8 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (1-0, 1.59)

Tanaka gets the Game 1 nod after putting together the best start for New York in the ALDS - a seven-inning effort in Game 3 in which he scattered three hits and struck out seven without allowing a run. The Japan native is enjoying a string of 14 consecutive scoreless frames going back to the regular season and owns 22 strikeouts in that span. Tanaka suffered through his worst start of the season against Houston on May 14, when he was roughed up for eight runs and seven hits - four homers - in 1 2/3 innings.
Keuchel gets the Game 1 nod after Justin Verlander was used for four innings of relief in the clinching game of the ALDS in Boston. The 29-year-old Keuchel started Game 2 of the ALDS and breezed through 5 2/3 frames, striking out seven while allowing one run, to make it four starts in a row surrendering two or fewer runs going back to the regular season. Keuchel is 5-2 with a 1.24 ERA in seven career starts against New York, including six scoreless innings in the 2015 wild card game at Yankee Stadium.

                      WALK-OFFS

                      1. The Astros took five of the seven meetings during the regular season, including two of three at home.

                      2. New York RF Aaron Judge went 1-for-20 in the ALDS and set a record with 16 strikeouts in a postseason series.

                      3. Houston 2B Jose Altuve went 8-for-15 with three homers, five runs scored and four RBIs in the ALDS.

                      PREDICTION: Astros 6, Yankees 2

QB Kelly Bryant threw for 200 yards and a touchdown before exiting with an ankle injury.

Through their first six games, Clemson features a balanced offense that ranks 26th in total yards and is scoring 35 points on average. Syracuse is quietly ranked 46th in total defense and allowing 24.3 points per game.

The Syracuse Orange have split their first six games and are an improving squad. Second year head coach Dino Babers is one win away from matching last season’s win total and a bowl appearance is a possibility. Last weekend, Syracuse racked up 500 yards of total offense during an exciting 27-24 home victory against Pittsburgh. Junior signal caller Eric Dungey threw for 365 yards and two touchdowns on the afternoon.

For the season, Syracuse ranks 32nd nationally in total offense and has scored 32 points per contest. Clemson is the most talented defensive unit in the country and ranks 8th in yards allowed.

Free Betting Pick: Clemson Tigers -22.5
Clemson has won the last four meetings in this series, including a dominant 54-0 home victory last season. The Tigers are expected to have starting QB Kelly Bryant available for this game and I would look for them to pull away in the second half. Final Score Prediction, Clemson Tigers win and cover ATS 44-13.

Washington State has found success in California and have covered the spread their last seven of eight games played there. QB Luke Falk threw for 282 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Falk's three touchdowns were thrown to three different targets.

The California Bears were sitting pretty when they started the season off 3-0. Since then the Bears have lost three straight games. California lost to the Ducks on the road 45-24 and have a much tougher test on Friday night. The Bears are 1-2 on their home field this season and 0-3 in Conference action.

In Game Five, Didi Gregorius hit two home runs to power the Yankees to a 5-2 series clinching road triumph.
