      Preview: Celtics at Heat

      Gracenote
      Oct 27, 2017

The first few days of the regular season were painful - literally and figuratively - for the Boston Celtics, but their turnaround has been impressive. The Celtics look to make it four wins in a row when they cap a quick two-game road trip at the Miami Heat on Saturday.

The loss of Gordon Hayward in the season opener was followed by an eight-point loss to the Milwaukee Bucks in the opener at home for Boston, but it returned the favor with a 96-89 win over the Bucks on Thursday in Milwaukee. Al Horford had his best offensive game of the season with 27 points on 11-of-14 shooting and Kyrie Irving followed suit with a season-high 24 points for the Celtics, who held opponents to an average of 90 points during the winning streak. The Heat are 2-1 thus far on a six-game homestand after dropping a 117-100 decision to the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday. Miami center Hassan Whiteside (knee) missed three straight games and remains day-to-day.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCS Boston, FS Sun (Miami)

ABOUT THE CELTICS (3-2): Aside from Horford and Irving, the rest of the Celtics combined to shoot a woeful 12-for-46 from the floor, but the two stars can credit reserve Marcus Smart for helping to find a way to raise their production. "Al's a unique player that we have who can dominate from the inside and the outside," Smart told reporters. "So as a guard it's our job to get him the ball. If he hits his first two shots you've gotta go back to him, so you've gotta find ways for him to get the ball. When Kyrie has the ball, he draws so much attention that on the back side, when you set screens, they're not even paying attention. ... So he found his sweet spot to the corner and Kyrie found him." Horford made 4-of-5 3-pointers - two during a third-quarter run when Smart set a key screen to free Horford for one and then fed him for another - and is 9-for-16 from beyond the arc over the last three games.

ABOUT THE HEAT (2-2): Rookie forward Bam Adebayo made his first career start in Wednesday's loss and finished with four points and eight rebounds in 20 minutes, and was part of a crew that allowed the Spurs to shoot 55.3 percent. "We just need to get just a little bit more acquainted with each other," forward James Johnson (21 points) told reporters of his team, which was a top-5 defensive unit a season ago but has struggled on that end in the early going. "Maybe a little bit more talking, a little bit more eye to communication. The Spurs are a great team and they taught us a lot about ourselves." Tyler Johnson led the way on the offensive end with 23 points after he was held to single digits in each of the first three contests.

      BUZZER BEATERS

      1. Smart returned from a two-game layoff due to an ankle injury and was 2-for-10 against Milwaukee, leaving him with a 28.2 percent mark from the floor for the season.

      2. Heat C Kelly Olynyk, who played his first four seasons in Boston before signing with Miami this offseason, is 6-of-11 from 3-point range.

      3. The Celtics have won seven consecutive meetings and four in a row in Miami.

      PREDICTION: Celtics 104, Heat 99

                  Preview: Avalanche at Golden Knights

                  Gracenote
                  Oct 27, 2017

The Vegas Golden Knights rapidly are rewriting the NHL's record book with respect to expansion teams, as they became the first club in the 100-year history of the league to win seven of its first eight games in its inaugural season. The Golden Knights look to match the longest winning streak by an expansion team when they vie for their fifth straight victory on Friday against the visiting Colorado Avalanche.

"To be honest, it doesn't feel like we're an expansion team," forward Pierre-Edouard Bellemare told reporters. "We just try to work every game, shift after shift. Some nights, maybe that won't work. But so far, it has for seven of them." Bellemare scored what proved to be the winning goal late in the second period as Vegas improved to 5-1-0 on its seven-game homestand with Tuesday's 4-2 triumph over Chicago. Colorado will get a look at both of those clubs as it opens a back-to-back at T-Mobile Arena before hosting the Blackhawks on Saturday. Matt Nieto would love to repeat his latest performance in either tilt, as he helped the Avalanche snap a three-game losing streak with a hat trick in Tuesday's 5-3 victory over Dallas.

TV: 6 p.m. ET, TVA, Altitude (Colorado), AT&T Sportsnet-Rocky Mountain (Vegas)

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (5-4-0): Defenseman Tyson Barrie notched an assist versus the Stars to extend his point streak to a career-high six games. Blake Comeau's point streak resides at just two contests, as he followed up a goal in a 4-3 loss to St. Louis on Oct. 19 with three assists against Dallas while playing in his 650th career game. Semyon Varlamov turned aside 34 shots, marking the third straight start in which he made at least 30 saves.
ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (7-1-0): Vegas has enjoyed success with three different goaltenders, as injuries to Marc-Andre Fleury and Malcolm Subban has forced rookie Oscar Dansk into action. "We were playing a minor-league goalie, but like we talk about all the time, the next man stepped up and did the job," coach Gerard Gallant told reporters following Dansk's 29-save performance versus the Blackhawks. "It's been unbelievable. Everything has gone our way." That includes an improvement on the power play, as William Karlsson scored versus Chicago to give Vegas four man-advantage goals in its last three games.

                  OVERTIME

                  1. Vegas is bidding to match the longest winning streak by a team at any point in its inaugural season, a mark set by the New York Rangers in 1926-27 and equaled by Edmonton in 1979-80.

                  2. Colorado boasts five players with a team-leading three goals - C Matt Duchene, RW Sven Andrighetto, LW Gabriel Landeskog, C Alexander Kerfoot and RW Nail Yakupov.

                  3. The Golden Knights will begin a six-game road trip in New York with back-to-back contests against the Islanders on Monday and Rangers the following night.

PREDICTION: Avalanche 3, Golden Knights 2

                      Preview: Senators at Devils

                      Gracenote
                      Oct 27, 2017

The New Jersey Devils should be a fresher team, if not a little healthier, when they try to rebound from their second loss of the season Friday against the visiting Ottawa Senators. The Devils have been idle since losing a 3-0 decision at home against San Jose on Oct. 20 for their second setback in eight games to start the season and could get three key players back in the lineup soon.

Cory Schneider (lower body) practiced Thursday and is expected to play Saturday against Arizona after perhaps backing up Keith Kinkaid in the contest versus Ottawa, while Kyle Palmieri (lower body) and Brian Boyle, who has been battling chronic myeloid leukemia, have been skating. The Devils registered a season-high 46 shots in a 5-4 overtime victory over the Senators on Oct. 19, receiving two goals and an assist from 2017 first overall draft pick Nico Hischier. Ottawa has lost five games but just one in regulation after grinding out a 5-4 triumph over Philadelphia on Thursday without three of its top forwards. Jean-Gabriel Pageau stepped up to score his first goal of the season and added two assists for the Senators, who have netted at least four tallies in six of their 10 games.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN5, RDS2 (Ottawa), MSG Plus (New Jersey)

ABOUT THE SENATORS (5-1-4): Bobby Ryan is out for about a month due to a broken finger and No. 1 center Kyle Turris (viral infection) is not expected to play against New Jersey, but the versatile Zack Smith (upper body) could return after missing three games. Mark Stone tallied for the sixth time on Thursday to tie Derick Brassard for the team lead in both goals and points (10), but defenseman Erik Karlsson is hot on their heels with eight assists in five contests since returning from a foot injury. Ottawa thwarted both of the Flyers' power plays on Thursday and leads the NHL in penalty-killing (92.6 percent).

ABOUT THE DEVILS (6-2-0): New Jersey was solid on the power play over its first six games of the season (8-for-26) but has been scoreless on nine opportunities over the last two contests, including an 0-for-5 performance against San Jose. Taylor Hall has scored just one goal but shares the team lead with rookie defenseman Will Butcher (nine assists) at nine points - two better than Hischier and Palmieri, who did not practice with the team on Thursday. Kinkaid, who is 2-1-0 with a .932 save percentage, replaced the injured Schneider and stopped all nine shots he faced against Ottawa last week to earn the victory.

                      OVERTIME

                      1. Ottawa C Logan Brown, who was the 11th overall pick in the 2016 draft, recorded one assist in four games before being returned to Windsor of the Ontario Hockey League on Wednesday.

                      2. New Jersey LW Brian Gibbons, who spent the previous two seasons in the minors, has registered three goals and a plus-6 rating in eight games.

                      3. The Senators have earned at least one point in their last four meetings with the Devils (3-0-1).

                      PREDICTION: Devils 4, Senators 3

The Columbus Blue Jackets hope to conclude their four-game homestand with an even record when they host the Winnipeg Jets on Friday. Columbus began its stretch at Nationwide Arena with losses to Tampa Bay and Los Angeles before turning the tide with a 5-1 triumph over Buffalo on Wednesday.

Thirteen players landed on the scoresheet and the Blue Jackets had five different goal-scorers as the team recorded five tallies for the third time in five games - including a 5-2 victory at Winnipeg on Oct. 17. The Jets are looking to extend their road point streak to four contests after enduring a 2-1 overtime loss in Pittsburgh on Thursday. Josh Morrissey scored the lone goal for Winnipeg as it suffered its 17th consecutive loss in the Steel City. The 22-year-old defenseman, who was selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2013 draft, became just the fourth member of the Jets with multiple tallies this season.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN3 (Winnipeg), FSN Ohio (Columbus)

ABOUT THE JETS (4-3-1): Matt Hendricks made his debut for Winnipeg on Thursday, recording 8 minutes, 57 seconds of ice time in 14 shifts. The 36-year-old, who signed a one-year contract with the Jets after spending the previous 3 1/2 seasons with Edmonton, missed the first seven games of the campaign with a lower-body injury he suffered during the preseason. Nikolaj Ehlers has scored all of his team-leading six goals over his last six contests, with four coming on the road.

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (6-3-0): Nick Foligno has been landing on the scoresheet with regularity this season, notching at least one point in seven of his nine games. The 29-year-old captain has recorded a goal in three of his last four contests and ranks second on the team with eight points - two behind leader Artemi Panarin. The 25-year-old Panarin has registered an assist in four of his last five games and is one shy of 100 for his career.

                          OVERTIME

                          1. The Blue Jackets, who are 10-for-10 on the penalty kill at home this season, can set the franchise record for most points after the first 10 games of a campaign with a victory on Friday.

                          2. Winnipeg assigned LW Nic Petan to Manitoba of the American Hockey League after activating Hendricks from injured reserve.

                          3. Columbus has scored 14 goals in the second period this season, matching its combined total in the first and third sessions.

PREDICTION: Blue Jackets 4, Jets 2

The St. Louis Blues play away from home for the final time during a road-heavy first month of the season when they visit the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday. St. Louis had eight of its first 11 games of 2017-18 scheduled away from Scottrade Center, where it made a rare appearance on Wednesday and improved to 3-0-0 with a 5-2 triumph over Calgary.

Alex Steen registered his first four points of the season (goal, three assists) in the win and Jaden Schwartz tallied to extend his point streak to five games as the Blues earned points for the fourth consecutive contest (3-0-1). Carolina avoided a three-game losing streak on Thursday by posting a 6-3 victory at Toronto. Josh Jooris scored his first two goals as a member of the Hurricanes and Teuvo Teravainen notched a tally and two assists as the club recorded its third win in the last four road contests. Jeff Skinner leads Carolina with seven points, five of which he has posted over the last four games.

Haydn Fleury, a 21-year-old defenseman who was the seventh overall pick in the 2014 draft, registered a pair of assists in his eighth NHL game on Thursday for his first two career points.
