      Preview: Bulls at Raptors

      Gracenote
      Nov 6, 2017

The Toronto Raptors' long-awaited return home resulted in a disappointing loss. They will try to secure their first home victory in well over two weeks when they host the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday night.

After going 3-3 on their first major road trip of the season - capped by an impressive win at Utah - the Raptors came back to Air Canada Centre and put forth their lowest-scoring effort of the season in a 107-96 loss to the Washington Wizards on Sunday. "We have to decide what kind of team we're going to be. Our starts have been horrendous," head coach Dwane Casey told reporters, referencing a first quarter in which Toronto was outscored 32-17. The Bulls had only 19 points in both the first and second quarters and finished with just 90 in an overtime loss to New Orleans at home on Saturday. The Raptors won the first meeting 117-100 in the season opener for both teams last month, despite getting 11 points from All-Star guard DeMar DeRozan.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), TSN (Toronto)

ABOUT THE BULLS (2-6): Chicago continues to chuck up loads of 3-pointers - at least 28 in every game - but accuracy remains an issue, as it has hit less than 30 percent in five of eight contests, including Saturday's 11-for-42 effort. Justin Holiday is at 28.6 percent over a five-game stretch after a hot start to the season and leading scorer Lauri Markkanen was 2-for-11 against the Pelicans. Power forward Bobby Portis will return from an eight-game suspension for an altercation with teammate Nikola Mirotic and make his season debut Tuesday.

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (5-4): Kyle Lowry's difficult start to the season continued Sunday, as the All-Star point guard was ejected after missing all four of his shot attempts in 12 lackluster minutes. The 31-year-old is averaging 11.9 points - roughly half his output last season - while shooting 37.6 percent, and his ejection gave backup Fred VanVleet a chance to take advantage of some extra playing time. "We just tried to bring energy and change the pace of the game," VanVleet - who scored eight of his 10 points in the second half - told the media. "Obviously, we got a little bit of a spark there to get us back in it, but we have to close it out down the stretch."

      BUZZER BEATERS

      1. DeRozan has scored at least 24 points in seven of his last eight contests.

      2. Bulls PG Jerian Grant has 27 assists against two turnovers in his last four games.

      3. Toronto entered Monday shooting a league-worst 30.5 percent from 3-point distance after ranking 13th a season ago (36.3).

      PREDICTION: Raptors 108, Bulls 99

          Preview: Clippers at Spurs

          Gracenote
          Nov 6, 2017

The Los Angeles Clippers' hot start is a thing of the past after four losses in the last five games -- all at home -- and things only get tougher as they embark on a stretch with eight of nine on the road. The first of those contests is Tuesday, when the Clippers visit the San Antonio Spurs.

Los Angeles ripped off four straight wins to begin the campaign but failed to take advantage of a five-game homestand and hits the road after dropping a 104-101 decision to the Miami Heat on Sunday despite overcoming a 25-point deficit. "The road sometimes can be very mean. And sometimes it can be great," Clippers coach Doc Rivers told reporters. "You're kind of forced together. You spend more time together on the road. You just try to build. We're a team right now that every game is not an easy game. And so, we have to be ready to play." The Spurs were in a similar spot with four wins to start the season followed by four losses but have since turned things around again with a pair of wins. San Antonio got strong play from its bench in each of the last two games and continues to operate without Kawhi Leonard (quad) and Tony Parker (quad).

          TV:
8:30 p.m. ET, FSN Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), FSN Southwest (San Antonio)

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (5-4): Los Angeles outscored the Heat 35-15 in the fourth quarter on Sunday and is trying to take that momentum out onto the road. "We've got to carry this over," guard Austin Rivers said, according to the Los Angeles Times. "That feeling that we had as a team that last quarter, we've got to feel that. And understand that if we play like that, we give ourselves a good chance every night." The Clippers were led by 23 points from Blake Griffin, who is averaging 23.7 points.

ABOUT THE SPURS (6-4): San Antonio had four players off the bench score in double figures in a 108-101 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Friday and turned the same trick during Sunday's 112-95 drubbing of the Phoenix Suns. Shooting guard Bryn Forbes is making the most out of his opportunities off the bench and averaged 17 points on 13-of-23 shooting in those two wins. Veteran small forward Rudy Gay was brought in to lead that second unit and he is averaging 12.6 points in 23.2 minutes, scoring in double figures in eight of the team's 10 games.

          BUZZER BEATERS

          1. Spurs PG Patty Mills is 7-of-12 from 3-point range over the last two games after going 8-of-30 in the first eight contests.

          2. Clippers SF Danilo Gallinari (hip) left Sunday's game and is day-to-day.

          3. Los Angeles took three of the four meetings last season, including a 98-87 triumph in San Antonio on April 8.

          PREDICTION: Spurs 109, Clippers 101

              Preview: Nets at Nuggets

              Gracenote
              Nov 7, 2017

D'Angelo Russell was acquired by the Brooklyn Nets to be a difference-maker and the early returns are favorable. Russell has scored 23 or more points in four of his first nine contests with Brooklyn and looks to add another one to the tally when the Nets visit the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday in the third stop of a five-game road excursion.

Russell scored 13 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter of Monday's 98-92 victory over the Phoenix Suns and is averaging 21.3 points and 5.6 assists. "I just wanted to win. I did whatever it took to win," Russell said after helping the Nets end a four-game slide. "You get tired of losing after a while and this is something to build off of." The Nuggets are 2-1 on a six-game homestand after suffering a 127-108 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Saturday in a contest in which none of the starters scored in double digits. "Our starting team in the third quarter didn't have a lot of energy and when things went south we didn't fight or compete," Denver coach Michael Malone said of being outscored 43-21 in the stanza. "That was a little disappointing."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), Altitude (Denver)

ABOUT THE NETS (4-6): Small forward DeMarre Carroll is also fitting in well after two seasons in Toronto and contributed 14 points and a season-high 11 rebounds against Phoenix. Carroll has scored in double digits in eight of nine games played and is averaging 13.7 points and 6.9 rebounds. The 31-year-old's early season play is reminiscent of his stellar 2014-15 season with Atlanta when he averaged 12.6 points and made a career-high 120 3-pointers for the Hawks' 60-win squad.

              ABOUT THE NUGGETS (5-5):
Denver is a porous 28th in the NBA in free-throw percentage (71.8) and Malone is frustrated by the situation. "We're an awful free throw shooting team," Malone told reporters. "We can't be 28th in free-throw percentage and expect to win a lot of close games." Guard Jamal Murray (95 percent) and center Nikola Jokic (91.7) are enjoying stellar success from the line but at the other end of the spectrum is center Mason Plumlee (44.8) and guard Will Barton (59.3).

              BUZZER BEATERS

              1. The Nuggets defeated the Nets 124-111 on Oct. 29 behind a season-best 26 points from Murray.

              2. Brooklyn reserve Trevor Booker (back) will likely miss his third straight game, while fellow F Rondae-Hollis Jefferson (hip) is questionable after leaving Monday's contest.

              3. Barton scored 21 points against Golden State for his second 20-point outing of the season.

              PREDICTION: Nuggets 113, Nets 97

                  Preview: 76ers at Jazz

                  Gracenote
                  Nov 6, 2017

The Philadelphia 76ers matched their longest winning streak since the 2013-14 campaign and look to make it five straight victories when they visit the Utah Jazz on Tuesday. The Jazz represent a major road block as they have beaten Philadelphia nine consecutive overall times and 12 straight at home dating back to 2005.

The feel-good 76ers are opening a five-game road trip and looking to stay above .500 after reaching that elusive mark. "I didn't even realize that," Philadelphia coach Brett Brown said after being told about the above-.500 milestone after Friday's 121-110 win over the Indiana Pacers. "I completely mean this - my vision line is so much broader. I do understand, and we're proud of that, but I'm very focused on other things. We're still growing." Utah is opening a four-game homestand and that's a welcome development with the team standing 5-1 at home and 0-4 on the road. The Jazz were routed 137-110 by Houston on Sunday when Rockets star James Harden poured in a career-best 56 points.

                  TV:
9 p.m. ET, NBCS Philadelphia, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Utah)

ABOUT THE 76ERS (5-4): Philadelphia brought in sharpshooter J.J. Redick is loosen up defenses and he shredded Indiana's apart with season highs of 31 points and eight 3-pointers in Friday's victory. "He's amazing. He's a great player, great leader, and a great shooter, obviously," rookie point guard Ben Simmons told reporters. "He came up big for us. When he's open I try to find him, it's like he hits every shot." Redick, who made 200 or more 3-pointers in each of the past three campaigns, is 20-of-46 this season and averaging 15 points per game.

                  ABOUT THE JAZZ (5-5):
Utah looked badly outclassed by a Houston team that runs up and down the floor and knocked down 23-of-39 3-point attempts and even scored 48 points in the third quarter. "Right now, we have a few home games coming up and we have to focus on Philly," shooting guard Rodney Hood said afterwards. "We really need that win. This is an easy game to bounce back from because we feel like we got embarrassed. We have to fight and get back to what we're really about." Hood made half his 10 shots while scoring 12 points against Houston after being 6-of-30 from the field over the previous two games.

                  BUZZER BEATERS

                  1. The Jazz won last season's two meetings by an average of 21 points.

                  2. Philadelphia C Joel Embiid is being rested Tuesday, while Simmons has two triple-doubles, three 20-point outings and six double-digit rebounding performances through nine games.

                  3. Utah rookie G Donovan Mitchell is averaging 23.3 points over the past three games, including efforts of 28 and 25 points.

                  PREDICTION: Jazz 102, 76ers 101

                      Preview: Grizzlies at Trail Blazers

                      Gracenote
                      Nov 6, 2017

Damian Lillard is on a scoring spree and the Portland star looks to top 30 points for the fifth straight game when the Trail Blazers host the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday. Lillard is averaging 34.3 points during his run, and tallied 36 points in Portland's 103-99 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday.

Lillard also recorded a season-best 13 assists against Oklahoma City as he outplayed reigning MVP Russell Westbrook. "I go into every game with the same attitude, but obviously when you're playing against a former MVP, you want to embrace that challenge," Lillard said after the performance. "You know that if you don't, he's going to take your lunch. If I don't step up, how's my team going to step up?" Memphis limps into the Pacific Northwest after suffering a dreadful 107-102 road loss against the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday. "We just waited too long to have that sense of urgency to win the game," Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley said afterwards. "We have to be better, especially on the second game of a back-to-back against a young team. We didn't start the way we wanted to. It's very tough. You can't spot anybody in this league points. People are too talented. Teams are too good. Unfortunately, we just didn't have what it took early on."

                      TV:
10 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Memphis), NBCS Northwest (Portland)

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (6-4): Conley topped 20 points in back-to-back games in Los Angeles - 22 in a win over the Clippers before 23 versus the Lakers -- and has seen mixed results from a roster in transition. "I have been pleased with our effort. I think our team is learning," Conley said. "We still have a very long way to go, we have a lot of young guys who are learning the game. We are trying to do our best to bring everybody up to speed but we are going to have nights where we don't seem to have everything going for us." One newcomer who is thriving is veteran guard Tyreke Evans, who has posted three straight 20-point outings and is averaging 26 points on 59.2 percent shooting during the hot stretch.

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (6-4): Lillard (27.1) and shooting guard CJ McCollum (22.1) are both averaging over 20 points per game and Portland is also receiving solid offensive play from center Jusuf Nurkic. The 7-footer is averaging 16 points and 7.8 rebounds and played especially well over the past three games while averaging 24 points, eight rebounds and 3.3 assists and shooting 60.4 percent from the field. Valuable power forward Al-Farouq Aminu is expected to miss two more weeks with an ankle injury so the Trail Blazers are looking for players like Ed Davis (6.8 points, 8.3 rebounds), Noah Vonleh (2.0 points, 3.7 rebounds) and rookie Caleb Swanigan (3.6 points, 3.4 rebounds) to step up their contributions.

                      BUZZER BEATERS

                      1. The Trail Blazers went 2-1 against the Grizzlies last season behind McCollum, who averaged 26.3 points and shot 57.4 percent from the field.

                      2. Memphis C Marc Gasol had 15 points and 10 rebounds against the Lakers for his fifth double-double of the season.

                      3. Portland swingman Evan Turner is averaging just 4.8 points on 9-of-26 shooting over the past four games.

PREDICTION: Trail Blazers 113, Grizzlies 109

                          Preview: Thunder at Kings

                          Gracenote
                          Nov 6, 2017

The Oklahoma City Thunder are working on their chemistry and feel they aren't too far away from winning more games. The reconfigured Thunder look to get back to the .500 mark on Tuesday when they visit the woeful Sacramento Kings, who have lost seven straight contests.

Oklahoma City added forwards Paul George and Carmelo Anthony to make it a three-star club with reigning MVP Russell Westbrook, but the early results have been mixed. "It's Year One for this team," George told reporters after Sunday's 103-99 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. "It's a new nucleus and a new roster. We're playing against teams that have been together for a while, so it just comes down to chemistry. We'll learn, we'll figure it out and we'll keep the show rolling." Sacramento has been collapsing in the wrong direction and started 1-8 for the first time since the 1990-91 campaign. The Kings lost by 27 points twice during a three-game span last week before suffering a 108-99 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Saturday.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, NBATV, FS Oklahoma, NBCS California (Sacramento)

ABOUT THE THUNDER (4-5): Each member of the Oklahoma City star trio is getting enough shots to average more than 20 points per game, with George leading at 21, followed by Anthony (20.6) and Westbrook (20.1). The triple-double machine is still rolling as Westbrook posted four in nine games after recording an NBA-record 42 last season. The Thunder rank second in scoring defense (96.4 points per game) and allowed more than 100 on four occasions - all losses - and lead the NBA in steals at 9.9 after having 11 thefts in the defeat against Portland.

                          ABOUT THE KINGS (1-8):
Sacramento added veteran power forward Zach Randolph and point guard George Hill in the offseason with the thought that the pair would help them be competitive. But the slow start and recent large defeats display an idea that isn't being followed by results, and the club seems headed to its 12th consecutive season of missing the playoffs. "They're young and we understand we're rebuilding with young guys and it's tough," Randolph said of the slow start. "It's a tough go, especially when you're a competitor and you're used to winning, it's tough. Just getting your mind adjusted, come out, and play hard every night, lead by example."

                          BUZZER BEATERS

                          1. The Thunder went 2-1 versus the Kings last season and are 26-7 against them during the Oklahoma City era.

                          2. Oklahoma City C Steven Adams is averaging 5.5 points over the past two games after averaging 16 over the previous five outings.

                          3. Hill missed the loss to Detroit due to personal reasons and it hasn't been determined if he will return against the Thunder.

                          PREDICTION: Thunder 109, Kings 102
