Tuesday's NBA GOTD betting preview and odds: Clippers at Spurs

Los Angeles Clippers at San Antonio Spurs (-3.5, 202.5)

The Los Angeles Clippers' hot start is a thing of the past after four losses in the last five games - all at home - and things only get tougher as they embark on a stretch with eight of nine on the road. The first of those contests is Tuesday, when the Clippers visit the San Antonio Spurs.

Los Angeles ripped off four straight wins to begin the campaign but failed to take advantage of a five-game homestand and hits the road after dropping a 104-101 decision to the Miami Heat on Sunday despite overcoming a 25-point deficit. "The road sometimes can be very mean. And sometimes it can be great," Clippers coach Doc Rivers told reporters. "You're kind of forced together. You spend more time together on the road. You just try to build. We're a team right now that every game is not an easy game. And so, we have to be ready to play." The Spurs were in a similar spot with four wins to start the season followed by four losses but have since turned things around again with a pair of wins. San Antonio got strong play from its bench in each of the last two games and continues to operate without Kawhi Leonard (quad) and Tony Parker (quad).

        TV:
8:30 p.m. ET, FSN Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), FSN Southwest (San Antonio)

        LINE HISTORY:
The home Spurs opened as five-point favorites but that number has been bet down to -3.5. The total hit betting boards at 200.5 and had been bumped up two full points to 202.5.

        INJURY REPORT:

Clippers - SF D. Gallinari (Doubtful, Hip), SF J. Wilson (Out Indefinitely, Back), PG M. Teodosic (Out Indefinitely, Foot).

Spurs - PG D. White (Out Indefinitely, Wrist), C J. Lauvergne (Out, Ankle), PG T. Parker (Out, Quadricep), SF K. Leonard (Out Indefinitely, Quadricep).

        POWER RANKINGS:
        Clippers (-11) - Spurs (-10.9) + home court (-3) = Spurs -2.9

        CHAMPIONSHIP FUTURES:

        Clippers +7,000
        Spurs +1,200

        ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (5-4 SU, 5-4 ATS, 3-6 O/U):
Los Angeles outscored the Heat 35-15 in the fourth quarter on Sunday and is trying to take that momentum out onto the road. "We've got to carry this over," guard Austin Rivers said, according to the Los Angeles Times. "That feeling that we had as a team that last quarter, we've got to feel that. And understand that if we play like that, we give ourselves a good chance every night." The Clippers were led by 23 points from Blake Griffin, who is averaging 23.7 points.

        ABOUT THE SPURS (6-4 SU, 5-5 ATS, 4-6 O/U):
San Antonio had four players off the bench score in double figures in a 108-101 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Friday and turned the same trick during Sunday's 112-95 drubbing of the Phoenix Suns. Shooting guard Bryn Forbes is making the most out of his opportunities off the bench and averaged 17 points on 13-of-23 shooting in those two wins. Veteran small forward Rudy Gay was brought in to lead that second unit and he is averaging 12.6 points in 23.2 minutes, scoring in double figures in eight of the team's 10 games.

        TRENDS:

        * Clippers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games.
        * Spurs are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
        * Under is 5-1 in Clippers last 6 when their opponent scores 100 points or more in their previous game.
        * Over is 5-1 in Spurs last 6 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.

        CONSENSUS:

                  Preview: Capitals at Sabres

                  Gracenote
                  Nov 7, 2017

First-year coach Phil Housley is not overreacting to his team’s early-season struggles and is hoping that approach will help the Buffalo Sabres find their form as they host the Washington Capitals on Tuesday. The Sabres have dropped three of their last four games while allowing a total of 17 goals and share last place in the Atlantic Division with Florida.

“I tend to look at things in a different perspective, just as a former player and now a coach,” Housley told the Buffalo News. “It’s easy to be a master of obvious and really hammer the nail. I try to put the players in a position to succeed. We’re going to still hold the players accountable - believe me.” The Sabres allowed just 22 shots in a 5-1 loss at Dallas on Saturday to split a two-game road trip and face a Washington team that is starting to find itself with four wins in five contests after a 3-2 overtime victory over Arizona on Monday. Defenseman John Carlson tallied in the extra session for his first goal of the season as the Capitals moved two games over .500 (8-6-1) for the first time in more than two weeks. Washington's Evgeny Kuznetsov notched a pair of assists on Monday to reach 200 points in his career and take over the team lead with 18.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCSN, NBCSN Washington Plus

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (8-6-1): Captain Alex Ovechkin scored for the second straight game Monday to push his season total to 12 goals after going scoreless for five consecutive contests. Nicklas Backstrom, who recorded 23 goals and 86 points last season, has gone six games without a point despite recording four shots in Monday’s victory, while Devante Smith-Pelley netted his second tally of the campaign. Lars Eller notched an assist in the win over Arizona, giving him five points in three games this month and eight in his last seven contests.

ABOUT THE SABRES (4-8-2): Buffalo is starting to get healthier on defense but may not get any of its four injured blue-liners back for the matchup against the Capitals. Rasmus Ristolainen (upper body) missed the last game and is day-to-day while Josh Gorges (lower body), Zach Bogosian (lower body) and Nathan Beaulieu (upper body) are skating and on the road to recovery. Evander Kane tops the team with seven goals and shares the lead in points (13) with Jack Eichel, who has not scored in five straight games.

                  1. The Capitals have won seven of the last eight meetings, including all three matchups in 2016-17 by a combined 10-4 score.

                  2. The Sabres and Capitals both are 1-for-21 on the power play over their last seven contests.

                  3. Washington G Braden Holtby posted his eighth victory of the season Monday, leaving him one shy of 200 for his career.

                      Preview: Blues at Devils

                      Gracenote
                      Nov 6, 2017

Vladimir Tarasanko has been the consistent scoring threat on a St. Louis Blues' team that has been known more for its tenacious defense than explosive offense. With at least a point in 11 of 15 contests this season, Tarasenko aims to send the red-hot Blues to their eighth straight victory over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday when the clubs meet in the Garden State.

Tarasenko, who scored and set up a goal in Saturday's 6-4 triumph over Toronto, gashed New Jersey for six points (one goal, five assists) in St. Louis' two-game season sweep in 2016-17. The Russian has 16 points this season to reside behind fellow 25-year-old Jaden Schwartz, who set up three goals against the Maple Leafs as the Central Division-leading Blues improved to 7-1-1 in their last nine games. New Jersey is looking to bounce back in the opener of its three-game homestand after dropping consecutive contests for the first time this season to conclude its three-game trek through Western Canada. Taylor Hall scored in both setbacks against the Alberta representatives to extend his point streak to five games (four goals, four assists) while increasing his point total to 13 (four goals, nine assists) in his last eight.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), MSG Plus 2 (New Jersey)

ABOUT THE BLUES (11-3-1): Captain Alex Pietrangelo scored twice against Toronto and has inserted his name in the admittedly ultra-early Norris Trophy conversation with 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in as many contests this season. The 27-year-old made his presence felt versus New Jersey last season, scoring and setting up a goal, and has six points (two goals, four assists) and averages 19:23 of ice time in 10 career encounters. Jake Allen is looking to rebound after allowing four goals in his last outing, but enters Tuesday's tilt with just a 2-2-1 mark and 3.11 goals-against average on the road.

ABOUT THE DEVILS (9-3-1): Journeyman Brian Gibbons scored his team-leading and career-high seventh goal - and fourth in five games - in Sunday's 5-4 shootout loss to Calgary. The 29-year-old netted just five career tallies prior to this season and in some circles made the roster somewhat surprisingly out of training camp. Fellow forward Adam Henrique's position was secure, but the 27-year-old has been held off the scoresheet in each of the last three games and limited to just three goals this season after erupting for a career-best 30 in 2015-16 and scoring 20 last season.

                      OVERTIME

                      1. New Jersey G Cory Schneider has permitted at least three goals in six of his last seven outings and owns a 3-5-1 career mark versus St. Louis.

                      2. The Blues have thwarted 12 of their last 13 short-handed situations in the last six games after being gouged for seven power-play goals in the previous five.

                      3. Devils rookie C Nico Hischier, who was the top overall pick of the 2017 draft, has collected nine points (two goals, seven assists) in his past nine games.

                      PREDICTION: Devils 3, Blues 2

                          Preview: Oilers at Islanders

                          Gracenote
                          Nov 6, 2017

The New York Islanders aim to improve upon their best home start to the season in 35 years on Tuesday when they welcome the return of former first-round pick Ryan Strome and the sputtering Edmonton Oilers. The Islanders skated to a 6-4 triumph over Colorado on Sunday to improve to 6-2-0 in their last eight contests overall and 5-0-1 at Barclays Center this season, marking their best six-game start at home since 1982-83 (6-0-0).

Mathew Barzal extended his point streak to five games (two goals, eight assists) in scintillating fashion, setting up a franchise-rookie record five assists on Sunday. "It's fun to play with him. His speed is his No. 1 attribute," said former Oiler Jordan Eberle, who has fit in nicely in Brooklyn since being acquired for Strome in June. According to Sportsnet, Edmonton is not as enamored with Strome, who recorded a 50-point season in his sophomore campaign of 2014-15 but is off a horrendously slow start in 2017-18 with two goals and three assists in 13 games. The Oilers' offense has hit the skids from last season, as the club has scored two or fewer goals in nine of 13 outings and is coming off a 4-0 setback versus Detroit on Sunday.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TVA, Sportsnet Oilers (Edmonton), MSG Plus (New York)

ABOUT THE OILERS (4-8-1): Coach Todd McLellan knows that speed kills, and he's seeing his once ultra-quick club getting thrashed on the scoreboard. "I don't think we defend quick enough," McLellan told reporters. "Our penalty kill isn't reacting fast enough, our power play doesn't react quick enough. There's plays there and a lot of these open nets that are laying there, we're just a fraction slow on firing the puck. We have to play faster." Reigning Hart Trophy winner Connor McDavid was limited to a season-low 15:55 of ice time versus the Red Wings, but he'll likely see more than that as he aims to rebound against a New York club that kept him off the scoresheet in both encounters last season.

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (8-5-1): Josh Bailey extended both his career-high point streak and the NHL's longest active run to nine games by setting up a pair of goals on Sunday, earning NHL Second Star of the Week honors the following day. The 28-year-old increased his totals to two tallies and 14 assists in that stretch and is also riding an eight-game assist streak, one shy of the franchise record. Captain John Tavares has found his offense with eight points (six goals, two assists) during his four-game point streak for New York, which has scored least one goal in 17 consecutive periods.

                          OVERTIME

                          1. New York owns a sterling 9-0-1 mark against Edmonton at home in the last 10 encounters, but the Oilers skated to a 4-3 shootout win in Brooklyn on Nov. 5, 2016.

                          2. Edmonton sent 2017 first-round pick Kailer Yamamoto, 19, to Spokane of the Western Hockey League, thereby electing against burning the first year of his entry-level contract.

                          3. New York is 9-for-16 on the power play in its last four games after sputtering out of the blocks with a 2-for-33 conversation rate.

                          PREDICTION: Oilers 4, Islanders 2

The two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins attempt to snap out of their recent funk while taking on an old friend when they host the struggling Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday. Rick Tocchet, who was an assistant for Mike Sullivan from 2014-17 and also won a Stanley Cup as a player with the Penguins in 1992, returns to the Steel City as the coach of the Coyotes.

The Penguins hope to get back to playing like they did during Tocchet’s tenure with them after dropping four of their last five contests - all on the road - and managing 13 goals in an eight-game span. “We didn’t give up a significant amount of scoring chances,” Sullivan told reporters after a 4-2 loss at Vancouver on Saturday. “I thought we generated a fair amount of scoring chances. We are a little snake-bitten right now. The puck isn’t going in the net for us.” The Coyotes have played better of late, earning five points in their last five games (2-2-1) after coughing up a two-goal lead and losing at Washington 3-2 in overtime on Monday. Rookie Clayton Keller scored his 11th goal in the setback and has tallied five times in the last seven contests to push his team-leading point total to 16.

                              TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh

ABOUT THE COYOTES (2-12-2): Scott Wedgewood made 37 saves in the loss at Washington, but No. 1 goaltender Antti Raanta is expected to be back in net after turning aside 36 shots in a 2-1 shootout win over Carolina on Saturday. Christian Dvorak and defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson each notched an assist on Monday to forge a tie for third on the team with nine points - one behind Max Domi. Arizona needs more from Tobias Rieder, who scored a career-high 16 goals last season and has managed just two in the early going - none in his last 13 games.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (8-6-2): Five of the team’s eight tallies in the last five games have come on the power play, and Evgeni Malkin has scored four of his six goals with the man advantage to lead the club. Malkin has registered 15 points - one behind team leader Phil Kessel - and Sidney Crosby is next with 13, but the captain has not scored a goal while posting a minus-6 rating in his last eight contests. Matt Murray, whose next win will be the 50th of his career, has dropped three of his last four decisions - allowing four goals twice - after starting the season 7-1-1.

                              OVERTIME

                              1. Arizona is 0-for-9 on the power pay over its last four contests and has killed off 11-of-12 penalties in the same span but is still 28th in the league at 73.8 percent.

                              2. Pittsburgh C Riley Sheahan, who has recorded one point in seven contests since being acquired from Detroit, is slated to play in his 300th NHL game on Tuesday.

                              3. The Penguins are 4-1-1 in the last six meetings, but the Coyotes posted an overtime win in the last matchup at Arizona in February.

                              PREDICTION: Penguins 5, Coyotes 1
