    Preview: Panthers at Hurricanes

    Gracenote
    Nov 6, 2017

Two teams struggling out of the gate in different ways look to turn things in a positive direction when the defensively-challenged Florida Panthers visit the low-scoring Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night. The Panthers have lost four straight and stood last in the league in goals-against per game (4.23) entering Monday while Carolina has dropped four in a row and six of seven (1-4-2), sliding near the bottom in scoring (2.58).

Florida is near the top of the NHL in scoring and five players boast double-figure points, but it has given up 20 goals in the last three contests after a 5-4 overtime setback against the New York Rangers on Saturday. “We have to play desperate hockey,” Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo told reporters after returning Saturday from a hand injury. “We’ve got to try to win 1-0 games. It’s tough to go back and forth with teams and get into shootouts every night.” Carolina has managed just eight goals over its last four games, including a 2-1 shootout loss at Arizona on Saturday, and does not have a player with double-figure points through 12 games. Hurricanes coach Bill Peters told reporters his players are pressing and frustrated offensively, but it must change fast: “It’s time to play quality hockey on a consistent basis.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Florida, FSN Carolinas

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (4-7-2): Center Vincent Trocheck has posted two goals and two assists in the last two games to tie fellow forwards Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov for the team lead with 15 points. Evgenii Dadonov is next with 14 points, but the Russian has not hit the scoresheet in each of the last two contests while Florida’s power play is 0-for-6 in the past three games. Luongo (1-2-1 in 2017-18) turned aside 39 shots in his return to the lineup Saturday and remains tied for fourth in NHL history with Curtis Joseph at 454 victories.

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (4-5-3): Carolina was expected to compete for a playoff spot this season and has not looked like a team that can get over that hump in the early going with just one victory in five home games. Jeff Skinner is the only player off to a strong start with seven goals while fellow forward Sebastian Aho boasts seven assists, but is still seeking his first tally after scoring 24 times as a rookie last season. Defenseman Brett Pesce (concussion), who has one assist in 10 games, missed the last two contests, and is questionable for Tuesday.

    OVERTIME

    1. Florida sent 18-year-old F Owen Tippett, who had one goal in seven games, back to his junior team Monday.

    2. Carolina G Scott Darling, who earned a point in each of his last three starts (1-0-2) is expected to start.

    3. The Panthers have won seven of the last nine meetings, but Carolina won two of the three contests in 2016-17.

    PREDICTION: Hurricanes 3, Panthers 2

        Preview: Predators at Blue Jackets

        Gracenote
        Nov 7, 2017

The Nashville Predators figure to display their newest acquisition when they wrap up a four-game road trip Tuesday against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Nashville, which is 2-1-0 on the trek, landed Kyle Turris from Colorado via Ottawa on Sunday in a three-team deal and signed the center to a six-year, $36 million contract.

"I'm real excited to be a Nashville Predator," Turris told the media during a conference call. "I watched the (Stanley Cup) Final last year - the excitement in the city of Nashville and how good the team is. I'm very excited about this opportunity to come in and help out and be a part of something great here." Columbus returns home from a three-game road trip that began well but had a disappointing finish. The Blue Jackets went 1-1-1 on the trek, starting with a 7-3 triumph at Florida before dropping a 5-3 decision to the New York Rangers on Monday. Columbus fell apart in the third period as it allowed four goals in the session, including three on the power play.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Tennessee (Nashville), FSN Ohio (Columbus)

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (7-5-2): Turris notched an assist against Vegas on Saturday in his final game with the Senators, giving him three goals and nine points in 11 contests. The 28-year-old netted a career-high 27 tallies last season, including six game-winners and six on the power play - matching personal bests in both categories. Viktor Arvidsson scored at 4:40 of overtime on Saturday to give Nashville a 4-3 win in Los Angeles and tie Filip Forsberg for the team lead in game-winning goals (two).

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (9-5-1): Artemi Panarin ended his 10-game goal-scoring drought Monday, netting his second of the season - both of which have come against the Rangers. Josh Anderson scored his third goal in three games, giving him a team-high six on the campaign. The 23-year-old right wing recorded a career-high 17 tallies last season.

        OVERTIME

        1. Forsberg leads the Predators with eight goals but has recorded just one in his last five games.

        2. Columbus LW Matt Calvert (upper body) was placed on injured reserve Monday and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks.

        3. Nashville sent D Samuel Girard, LW Vladislav Kamenev and a second-round pick in 2018 to the Avalanche for Turris.

PREDICTION: Predators 4, Blue Jackets 2

            Preview: Golden Knights at Canadiens

            Gracenote
            Nov 7, 2017

The Montreal Canadiens aim for their third straight victory Tuesday as they kick off a six-game homestand against the Vegas Golden Knights. Montreal closed out a 3-1-0 road trip Sunday with a 2-0 triumph at Chicago, as defenseman Joe Morrow recorded a goal and an assist in the third period while Charlie Lindgren made 38 saves in his season debut en route to his first career shutout.

The Canadiens, who were without Carey Price over the weekend due to a lower-body injury, have won four of their last five overall contests and earned points in three of their last four at home (2-1-1). Vegas is wrapping up a six-game road trip during which it has posted just one victory over the first five contests (1-3-1). The Golden Knights battled back to earn a point in Toronto on Monday, scoring once in both the second and third period to forge a tie before falling in a shootout. James Neal ended his four-game goal-scoring drought with his team-leading eighth of the season, giving him a point in two straight contests after being kept off the scoresheet in the first three games of the trek.

            TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Vegas), TSN2, RDS (Montreal)

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (9-4-1): Vegas' power play ranks in the top half of the league at 20.7 percent, thanks in part to Reilly Smith. The 26-year-old has scored three of his five goals this season with the man advantage, including one on Monday that gave him four points in as many games. Neal registered a season-high seven shots against the Maple Leafs after being held without one for the first time this season on Saturday by Ottawa.

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (6-8-1): Lindgren posted his fourth win in as many career starts as he helped lead Montreal to its first triumph in Chicago since Feb. 27, 2002. The 23-year-old native of Minnesota, who was recalled from Laval of the American Hockey League on Friday, has allowed five goals on 125 shots in the NHL. Defenseman Karl Alzner will break a tie with Danny Grant for the 15th-longest consecutive games played streak on Tuesday as he skates in his 556th straight contest.

            OVERTIME

            1. Canadiens C Jonathan Drouin ended his eight-game goal-scoring drought Sunday, giving him a point in four of his last five games.

            2. Vegas is in the midst of a six-game stretch during which it faces only Canadian teams.

            3. Montreal LW Charles Hudon missed Sunday's game with an upper-body injury and is day-to-day.

PREDICTION: Canadiens 5, Golden Knights 3

                Preview: Canucks at Flames

                Gracenote
                Nov 7, 2017

The Calgary Flames attempt to extend their winning streak to four games Tuesday as they continue their seven-game homestand against the Vancouver Canucks. Each of the first four contests during Calgary's string at Scotiabank Saddledome have been one-goal affairs, with the last two going beyond regulation.

Sean Monahan was one of three Flames to record a tally and an assist as he ran his goal-scoring streak to three games. Vancouver is kicking off a four-game road trip after completing a 2-2-1 homestand with a 3-2 setback against Detroit on Monday. Daniel Sedin and defenseman Michael Del Zotto scored 2:14 apart midway through the third period to forge a tie, with the former ending a six-game drought and the latter tallying for the first time this season. Sedin has recorded only six points in 14 games and is eight shy of 1,000 for his career.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver), Sportsnet West (Calgary)

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (7-5-2): Bo Horvat trails Brock Boeser by one point for the team lead after notching his 12th with an assist Monday. The 22-year-old Horvat has recorded five points in his last two games and three multi-point performances over his last seven contests. Captain Henrik Sedin registered his fourth assists of the campaign versus the Red Wings but remains in search of his first goal.

ABOUT THE FLAMES (8-6-0): Monahan leads the team with eight goals, half of which are game-winners. The 23-year-old center, who has notched points in four straight contests, also tallied in three consecutive games from Oct. 14-21. Johnny Gaudreau tops Calgary with 18 points and also is riding a four-game streak during which he has collected one goal and five assists.

                OVERTIME

                1. Flames RW Jaromir Jagr (lower-body injury), who has notched two assists in five contests, has missed six straight games.

                2. Vancouver has won three straight and four of its first five road contests this season, posting two shutouts while allowing a total of three goals in the victories.

                3. Calgary placed D Travis Hamonic (lower body) on injured reserve.

                PREDICTION: Flames 4, Canucks 1

                    Preview: Kings at Ducks

                    Gracenote
                    Nov 6, 2017

The Los Angeles Kings aren't ready to sound the alarm after answering a blistering 9-1-1 start with losses in two of their last three games, but coach John Stevens and company sure know the importance of what lies ahead. The Kings look to hit the on-ramp with some speed on Tuesday as they visit the Anaheim Ducks in the latest installment of the "Freeway Faceoff."

"They're big games. Any time you play a division game, they're big games, but certainly, Anaheim - since my time here and before that - I think you play a team where there’s always a lot at stake in the division and you're playing a team that you’ve had a history with recently with in the playoffs," Stevens told reporters. Captain Anze Kopitar mustered just two points against Anaheim last season but enters Tuesday's tilt with a four-game assist streak and a five-game point streak (one goal, five assists). While the Kings managed to overcome an early three-goal deficit in a 4-3 overtime loss to Nashville on Saturday, the Ducks followed up a 5-3 setback to the Predators with their third straight loss - a 2-1 shootout decision at San Jose on Saturday. Corey Perry scored his team's lone goal on a breakaway in his 900th career game, and the former Hart Trophy recipient has 45 points (23 goals, 22 assists) in 65 encounters versus the Kings.

                    TV: 10 p.m. ET, NBCSN

ABOUT THE KINGS (10-2-2): While "That 70s Line" enjoyed its time in the sun for a stretch, two members of that contingent - Tyler Toffoli and Tanner Pearson - have seen rookie Adrian Kempe heat up on the second line in the wake of Jeff Carter dealing with an ankle injury. For his part, Kempe is also attempting to win over Stevens in a bid to gain more ice time. "I just want to gain his trust and be a more consistent player. He's helped me a lot to improve my game in the defensive zone and I'm playing more minutes," said Kempe, who has recorded three goals, three assists and a plus-8 rating in his last seven games.

ABOUT THE DUCKS (6-6-2): John Gibson has yielded 14 goals en route to losing three of his last four starts, but the 24-year-old is hoping to continue his dominance versus the Kings as the Ducks open their five-game homestand. Gibson sports a brilliant 6-3-0 mark with two shutouts and a 1.80 goals-against average in nine career encounters against Los Angeles. Rickard Rakell ravaged the Kings for six points (two goals, four assists) last season and has notched an assist in back-to-back contests heading into Tuesday's contest.

                    OVERTIME

                    1. Toffoli has six points (five goals, one assist) in his last five games.

                    2. Anaheim C Derek Grant, who has eight points (three goals, five assists) in his last eight contests, has one goal and three assists during his career-high four-game point streak.

                    3. Pearson has collected one goal and four assists during his three-game point streak.

                    PREDICTION: Ducks 2, Kings 1
