      Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

      Saratoga - Race #2
#5 The Joke's On You Rice charge stretched out off the claim and aired, and while that came in Feb. and he's been off since, plus he's trying two turns here, he meets no one to fear, and it's clear the barn is only shipping up runners that are loaded for bear; look out.
#6 Naughty Prince ML favorite was up in time on debut and has plenty of upside for Ward, and Irad lands here too, so you know this one will be bet hard, but he's another who tries two turns, and spots an experience edge to the pick as well; underlaid contender.
#2 Icy Dude The other Rice enters off a modest MCL win at FL last month, but if nothing else it was at two turns, so that gives him a leg up on the top pick, plus he drew well and the price will be right too, so you could do worse than looking this way; in the mix.
Race Summary You certainly won't get rich on the 5 but that 3-1 ML doesn't seem too bad off such a rousing win in his first start for the barn, and the fact he's here says he should fire his shot, so play him to win and place, and especially to kick off the early Pk5 as well, since the 6 will be bet hard, and a win by the pick will knock out plenty of tickets right off the bat.
      Saratoga - Race #4
#4 Nonna Madeline Pletcher miss is one of three entered here for the barn, and the fact she's unproven at two turns means she may get overlooked, but she also projects as the controlling speed, has plenty of talent, is certainly bred for this, and it's not like the gals behind her are in raging form either; come and catch the pick.
#1 Golden Award The trickiest of reads was basically eased when she was 7-2 in the GI Phipps last time, so what you get here is anyone's guess, though she pulled this move before and came right back to win a GIII, and Mott wouldn't forge on if there was something amiss, but still, at a short price, she's no bargain; trying to beat.
#2 Bellera The more fancied of the Pletcher trio was a decent 3rd to Dunbar Road in the GII Del Cap last time, so she's kept good company, but it's not like she was a threat that day, and her prior runs don't inspire and don't make her 9-5 here, so sure, she can win, but she can do it at false odds without us; underneath only.
Race Summary That 4-1 ML on the pick, plus her expected race flow edge, make her very playable, especially since her two main rivals have some questions to answer, so play her to win and place, and especially in the early Pk5/Pk4 as well, since she's likely to fall through the wagering cracks and the budget players won't be able to cover her, which means a win would likely play a lot bigger than her tote odds would suggest.
      Saratoga - Race #8
#1 Winston's Chance Price player gutted it out going a one-turn mile at Belmont in the slop last time and now stretches out, but he could be the speed under Carmouche with this ideal draw, has won at this trip before, and the big run last time came in the slop, which is definitely in play today; upset special.
#7 Prompt Deep closer drops stiffly in class, as he's been tackling stakes runners of late, so this could wake him up, and his style says he'll get this trip and will be running on late, when a lot of these could be getting leg weary, at what figures to be a nice number as well; will be heard from in the lane.
#4 Dunph Class dropper was in much too deep in the GIII at PrM last time, so the drop will be to his liking, and the lone run for Diodoro prior to the stakes no-show was a big win at OP agaisnt AOC foes, and that effort would likely put him right on the line with this group today; would be no surprise.
Race Summary There's plenty to like about the pick, most notably his price, post, and propensity to run well on off tracks (10-3-4-2), so give him a look in all the slots, and especially in the late Pk5/Pk4 as well, since a win would add plenty of value to both sequences, and this just looks like the type of spot to price shopping, with the favorites a bit tough to trust, or barely faster than the longer shots on paper.

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Mountaineer - Race #1
#10 Trouble X Two Has the speed to overcome the wide draw, and he has the ability to settle and finish -- a dangerous combination. He can be tough here.
#9 Pence Misfire last out isn't his typical kind of run, so he's worth another look back in this spot with some previous runs that fit very well here.
#3 Gliding Alone Hit or miss form has come with better than what he'll find here, but he took a step forward last time out and owns back runs that would be tough here.
Race Summary Trouble X Two should be able to work out a really nice trip near the top here, and his reliable local turf form makes him a serious player, even at something shorter than his 5/1 ML price.
        Mountaineer - Race #2
#4 Ready to Charm Speed only meets a bit of forward company from the high draw, and there are some turf influences in her pedigree. Big chance tonight.
#3 Olga Again Solid effort at this trip last time out, but the price gets significantly shorter here after a big step forward in her turf debut.
#6 Chaos Has the ability to get a decent forward trip with these, and that may be enough to hang around for a piece in a spot where the top pair have a license to be pretty tough.
Race Summary Ready to Charm should get the right kind of run here and may improve on the move to the grass. The 4/1 ML price would be more than fair.
        Mountaineer - Race #5
#6 Kiss the Cat Forme Can't believe I'm landing on a mare making her 28th career start, but the race flow fits her and gives her a real chance to score. Most of these have chasing pace and little ability to finish, and she might get a bit outrun early and be able to finish late. Demand ML price.
#4 Sophie Rules Can be tough here while shipping from Laurel, but she's going to get overbet in here and might be dicey late in the lane.
#8 Let's Twirl Probably gets the right kind of finishing trip into splits that might be falling apart late, but she'll offer a much shorter price than the top choice.
Race Summary Kiss the Cat Forme is worth a small look at something like the 10/1 ML price. She has had 27 chances, but this is not a good group and the race shape suits her. Third start off the layoff gets her home?

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Harrah's Philadelphia - Race #1
#1 SOUTHERN ALLIE Will take some catching in repeat bid, has rail and Brennan.
#7 BOOGIE NIGHTS Has 26 wins, been idle 5 weeks, has high percentage connections.
#3 SPORTS CHARM Caught the favorite off good pocket trip, faces similar task.
Race Summary Southern Allie carried his speed the distance and ran away from the pocket-sitting second favorite through a :55.4 back half. The 13-year-old iron horse seeks his 80th victory. Don’t expect 2-1 odds, so play 1-3 and 1-7 exactas for some value.
          Hoosier Park - Race #3
#6 IMAGE CRUISINGAWAY Held second behind the fave through :56.2 back half.
#10 SLOW YOUR ROLL Got up for third, moves inside out, changes drivers for fifth start in a row.
#2 BEACH PASSAGE Made amends for near miss as odds-on choice, goes well again.
Race Summary Image Cruisingaway was no match for the even-money favorite in the faster division of a split race. She can parlay another close-up journey into her first win this year. Play 6-2 and 6-10 exactas.
          Northfield Park - Race #4
#4 SWAN BEFORE ALL Meadows invader should sit good trip, should prove tough on best.
#1 STARS AN STONES Has had a lot of chances at this level, will be running late, use in gimmicks.
#8 LUCKYCOMPETER Four wins this year stack up well, early position the key.
Race Summary Swan Before All, far back from outside posts against better at the Meadows, fits well with this groups and projects an ideal stalking trip. Play a 1-4-8 exacta box.

            Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

            Indiana Grand - Race #1
#3 Good Good Can benefit from having run longer distances this year and can benefit from a lively pace; can sustain his kick here.
#6 Zanesville Was third in his last two and was claimed by Brown last out; can get a garden trip and might be able to get a jump on other closers.
#1 Eskendereyas Dream Was an easy winner in two this season and is perfect in three local tricks; was claimed by Hammond barn last out.
Race Summary Good Good takes a while to get going much should be able to benefit from the activity in front of him; look from a solid run.
            Indiana Grand - Race #6
#3 Leading the Charge His only turf performance was a keeper as he drew off and won by nearly six lengths; can carve out a good trip just off the pace and probably will be overlooked.
#11 Two Last Words Has won three straight, including a strong optional claiming event at Tampa; has won two straight here and should be able to move well over the turf.
#7 Mai Tai's Gem Has two wins and two seconds in four starts and lost a heartbreaker to Two Last Words last out; forward factor throughout this one.
Race Summary Leading the Charge finished well for an easy win on the turf last out; takes a big step up the class ladder but looks much better on turf and should be taken seriously.
            Indiana Grand - Race #8
#8 Nothingbutflowers Was a clear winner in her only turf start, and the Violence filly has some left at the end of that one; it also was her first distance attempt and she moved up quite well.
#5 Copper Nickel Crushed fields in her last two here and makes her first turf attempt; developing into a classy filly.
#7 Violane Won her only turf start, which came last out, and she can be in the mix throughout; legit player.
Race Summary Nothingbutflowers' last start was too good to ignore and she looks like the best option to heavily favored Copper Nickel. Became a new filly when she went long and added turf.

MLB public betting, line movement for August 5
                  Patrick Everson

The Padres will try to take two of three from the Dodgers with a win in Wednesday night's matchup. Caesars sportsbooks have Los Angeles a -127 favorite, with San Diego +117.

MLB betting odds hit the board and drew some early dollars for Wednesday’s slate. Among the highlights: a Dodgers-Padres tilt in the NL West, Max Scherzer taking the ball for the Nationals, and the Phillies and Yankees hoping to get in a doubleheader.

Caesars sportsbooks provided insights on MLB opening lines and early line movement, sharp money and public betting for Wednesday’s contests.

                  MLB line movement

The Dodgers (8-4) and Padres (7-5) are both looking up at the Rockies (8-2) in the NL West. Los Angeles, which logged a 5-2 victory over San Diego on Tuesday, opened a -135 favorite with Ross Stripling taking the ball in a 9:10 p.m. ET start. The first move, however, was toward the host Padres, as the line shifted to L.A. -127/San Diego +117.

Scherzer and the Nationals opened -190 home favorites against the Mets and lengthened to -200 at Caesars, with New York +180 for a 6:05 p.m. ET game. The Phillies-Yankees doubleheader lines weren’t posted as of late Tuesday, with game times of 4:05 p.m. ET and 7:35 p.m. ET.

                  MLB public betting

Consensus suggested early public support for the Dodgers, certainly no surprise. Los Angeles took 75 percent of picks made Tuesday night. In a mirror move on Covers Consensus, the Nationals drew 75 percent of Tuesday night's picks.

NBA public betting, line movement for August 5
                        Patrick Everson

LeBron James and the Lakers face the Thunder in a Wednesday night clash inside the NBA Bubble. The line wasn't yet posted late Tuesday night, but the Lakers will surely be laying a few points.

NBA betting odds are up and drawing action for Wednesday’s six-game docket. The marquee matchup pits the Lakers against the Thunder, and the defending champion Raptors meet the Magic.

Multiple oddsmakers provided insights on NBA opening lines and early line movement, sharp money and public betting for Wednesday’s matchups. Covers will update this action report with NBA sharp picks vs. public bets and line movement throughout the day.

                        NBA line movement

The Lakers have won two of three so far in the NBA Bubble, including Monday’s 116-108 victory over Utah to clinch the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Bookmakers held off on posting the line for this 6:30 p.m. ET tipoff, so check back Wednesday.

Toronto is 2-0 in the bubble, as it followed a Saturday win over the Lakers with a Monday victory against the Heat. Covers Consensus had the Raptors opening -5 and advancing to -6 by late Tuesday night for an 8 p.m. ET start.

The Nets pulled the biggest bubble stunner so far, and in fact the biggest NBA point-spread upset since April 1993, when they beat the Bucks 119-116 as massive 18.5-point underdogs Tuesday. Now they’ve got to come back on no rest, though their matchup against the Celtics is in the 9 p.m. ET nightcap. The line on this game also wasn’t posted by late Tuesday night.

                        NBA public betting

Consensus showed the public siding early with the Raptors, who were landing 68 percent of picks. However, the large majority of those picks were at Toronto -5.

                          NBA Bubble Bets - Wednesday
                          Kevin Rogers

Memphis Grizzlies vs. Utah Jazz – 2:35 PM ET
                          MEM: 32-36 Straight-Up, 34-33-1 Against the Spread
                          UT: 42-25 Straight-Up, 31-34-2 Against the Spread

The Grizzlies entered the bubble in Orlando last week as the eighth seed in the Western Conference playoffs and had work to do to maintain that final spot. However, Memphis’ postseason chances are slipping away following three consecutive losses and suffered a huge blow as second-leading scorer Jaren Jackson, Jr. (17.4 ppg) is lost for the season with a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Jackson sustained the injury in Monday’s 109-99 setback to New Orleans as 4 ½-point underdogs. All three teams the Grizzlies have lost to during the restart are all chasing Memphis for the last playoff position in the West (New Orleans, San Antonio, and Portland). Memphis has yet to cover a game in Orlando, but the Grizzlies are coming off back-to-back UNDERS on 236 totals against the Pelicans and Spurs.

For the exception of a comeback victory over the Pelicans in the restart opener, the Jazz don’t have much to celebrate so far. Utah is still in the mix for the Northwest division title, but the Jazz are coming off consecutive rough performances in losses to the Thunder and Lakers. Oklahoma City dominated Utah from the tip-off in Saturday’s 110-94 setback as the Jazz fell in a 24-point halftime hole. The Jazz jumped out to a better start against the Lakers on Monday as six-point underdogs, but fell apart late in the third quarter in a 116-108 setback.

Utah has slipped to the fifth seed in the Western playoff race and own a slim half-game edge over Oklahoma City heading into Wednesday’s action. The Grizzlies edged the Jazz in the first meeting of the season, 107-106 as 7 ½-point ‘dogs on November 15, but Utah captured the last two matchups by nine and 14 points.

Philadelphia 76ers vs. Washington Wizards – 4:05 PM ET
                          PHI: 40-27 Straight-Up, 28-35-4 Against the Spread
                          WSH: 24-43 Straight-Up, 32-33-2 Against the Spread

It shouldn’t be a shock that the Wizards are 0-3 in the bubble on the verge of elimination with a decimated roster that’s without leading scorer Bradley Beal. What is shocking is the fact that Philadelphia has failed to cover twice as a heavy favorite and is lucky to be 1-1 through two games.

Starting with Washington, you don’t get extra points (or wins) for trying hard, but the Wizards were dealt a tough hand heading to Orlando with the insurmountable task to reach the eighth playoff spot in the East. The Wizards lost by 13 points to the Suns in the opener, fell by eight to the equally shredded roster of the Nets, and 11 points to Indiana, while not covering in any of the three defeats.

The 76ers are guaranteed to finish no lower than sixth when the playoffs begin later this month. But Philadelphia needs to start establishing themselves away from Wells Fargo Center, where the Sixers posted a league-best 30-2 home mark this season. Philadelphia squandered a 10-point fourth quarter lead in Saturday’s 127-121 setback to Indiana as six-point favorites and were on the ropes on Monday against a desperate San Antonio team.

The Sixers led by 14 points early in the fourth quarter against the suddenly surging Spurs, but San Antonio stormed back to take a two-point edge with 10 seconds remaining. Shake Milton put Philadelphia ahead for good after knocking down a three-pointer in the waning seconds to give the 76ers a 132-130 win, but it failed to cash as 7 ½-point favorites. The 76ers slipped to 1-8 ATS in its last nine games in the favorite role away from home.

Denver Nuggets vs. San Antonio Spurs – 4:05 PM ET
                          DEN: 44-23 Straight-Up, 30-33-4 Against the Spread
                          SA: 29-37 Straight-Up, 28-37-1 Against the Spread

The two biggest surprises since the NBA’s restart have been the play of two teams that were “playing out the string.” The Suns shocked the Clippers on a buzzer-beater on Tuesday to improve to 3-0, while the Spurs were on the verge of a 3-0 start before falling short to the 76ers on Monday. San Antonio has managed to cover in all three games as an underdog, including outright victories over Sacramento and Memphis.

The Spurs are two games behind the Grizzlies for the final playoff spot as Monday’s loss to Philadelphia adds some extra sting after taking the lead in the last half-minute of regulation. Gregg Popovich’s squad is seeking a 23rd consecutive playoff appearance, but four of the last five games are against the Nuggets, Jazz twice, and Rockets, all teams who have clinched a postseason berth.

Denver created some breathing room for the Northwest title by knocking off Oklahoma City in overtime on Monday, 121-113 as 5 ½-point underdogs. The Nuggets rebounded from a 20-point blowout loss to the Heat in the bubble opener as Denver continues to play without Jamal Murray, Gary Harris, and Will Barton. Second-year man Michael Porter broke out for a career-high 37 points, while Nikola Jokic put together a triple-double with 30 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists to give the Nuggets only their fourth cover in the past 13 games.

The Nuggets eliminated the Spurs in seven games of the first round of the playoffs last season, but met only once this season before the shutdown. San Antonio built a 14-point halftime advantage at Pepsi Center, but Denver rallied for a 127-120 triumph to barely cash as 6 ½-point favorites on February 10. The leading scorer for the Spurs that night was All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury.

Oklahoma City Thunder vs. L.A. Lakers – 6:35 PM ET
                          OKC: 41-25 Straight-Up, 41-25 Against the Spread
                          LAL: 51-15 Straight-Up, 36-29-1 Against the Spread

The first task for the Lakers heading to the bubble was to lock up the top seed in the Western Conference. Although LeBron James and the Lakers won’t have home-court advantage due to the bubble, they can cruise the next five games in the seeding portion after securing the number one seed in Monday’s 116-108 victory over Utah as six-point favorites.

The Lakers finally covered a game in their third try inside the bubble following a two-point win over the Clippers as a four-point favorite and a surprising 15-point setback to the defending champion Raptors. Anthony Davis torched the Jazz for 42 points and 12 rebounds, while James and Dwight Howard were the only two other Lakers to score in double-figures. Los Angeles cashed its first OVER in three bubble games, while improving to 3-0 this season against Utah.

The Lakers have knocked off the Thunder three times this season as the underdog has cashed in all three matchups. Los Angeles stunned Oklahoma City on the road as nine-point ‘dogs in the most recent meeting on January 11 in a 125-110 victory without James and Davis in the lineup. OKC grabbed ‘dog covers in a pair of close losses in November by five and three points, while all three contests sailed OVER the total.

Oklahoma City drew a pair of division rivals to start its play in Orlando and split against Utah and Denver. The Thunder routed the Jazz last Saturday, 110-94, as OKC held an opponent to below 100 points for the first time since January 9, when they limited Houston to 92 points. OKC couldn’t hold off Denver in Monday’s 121-113 overtime setback as 5 ½-point favorites despite a combined 47 points from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chris Paul.

Toronto Raptors vs. Orlando Magic – 8:05 PM ET
                          TOR: 48-18 Straight-Up, 37-28-1 Against the Spread
                          ORL: 32-35 Straight-Up, 33-32-2 Against the Spread

Orlando is creeping closer towards clinching its playoff berth as the Magic are trying to avoid the top-seeded Bucks in the first round. As long as Toronto remains in the second spot, there is the possibility of the Raptors and Magic hooking up in the opening round of the playoffs for a second straight season. The Raptors overcame a series opening loss to the Magic to win four straight games on its way to the franchise’s first NBA championship.

The Magic head into Wednesday’s action with no rest after a 120-109 defeat to the Pacers in a game Orlando trailed by 21 points after only one quarter. Orlando’s two bubble wins are over Brooklyn and Sacramento, but the Magic stepped up in class against the Pacers and move up another few notches against a Raptors’ team that has already defeated the Heat and Lakers to begin the restart.

Toronto put the clamps down on the Lakers in Saturday’s 107-92 rout as 2 ½-point underdogs thanks to outscoring Los Angeles, 66-48 in the second half. The Raptors held off the Heat on Monday, 107-103 as 2 ½-point favorites, while marking a second straight UNDER on a 221 ½ total. Toronto benefited from 33 made free throws, including a perfect 13-of-13 from Fred VanVleet, who finished with 36 points.

Teams with no rest inside the bubble own a 3-2 SU/ATS record as the Pacers and Heat each picked up underdog wins on Tuesday in this situation. The no rest scenario has not been kind to the Magic this season, who have lost in nine of 10 opportunities on the second end of a back-to-back, while covering only three times.

Brooklyn Nets vs. Boston Celtics – 9:05 PM ET
                          BKN: 31-35 Straight-Up, 32-34 Against the Spread
                          BOS: 44-22 Straight-Up, 38-24-4 Against the Spread

The biggest upset of the NBA season took place in August, which has never been uttered in the history of the league. Brooklyn shocked Milwaukee as 19-point underdogs on Tuesday afternoon, 119-116, while cashing on the money-line at hefty 15/1 odds. The Nets knocked down 21 three-pointers (on 57 attempts) and scored 73 first-half points against the likely top seed in the Eastern Conference. To be fair, none of Milwaukee’s starters played more than 20 minutes, but Brooklyn improved to 2-1 SU/ATS in the bubble and helped its case for a playoff spot.

The Celtics couldn’t take advantage of Miami playing without star Jimmy Butler in Tuesday’s 112-106 setback as five-point favorites. Boston fell behind by 12 points at halftime and couldn’t recover in its first loss to Miami this season in three meetings. Following an exciting four-point win over Portland on Sunday, the Celtics shot only 44% from the floor, while Gordon Hayward and Jaylen Brown combined to shoot 0-of-10 from three-point range.

Celtics’ guard Kemba Walker is expected to sit out on the second end of the back-to-back after a 15-point performance against the Heat. Brooklyn did not fare well with no rest this season by compiling a 2-7 SU and 3-6 ATS mark, while Boston went 5-4 SU and 6-3 ATS on the second leg of a back-to-back set. The Nets took two of three meetings from the Celtics this season, including a tremendous 51-point effort from Caris LaVert in a March 3 overtime triumph at TD Garden as Brooklyn erased a 17-point fourth quarter deficit.
