Stars vs Avalanche Matchup Report
Opening Odds Analysis
The Avs opened at -150, but that aggressive line has since settled more into the -135 range. The total was a sky-high 6.5 to start, but that number has since dipped a half-point at the majority of sportsbooks.
Dallas News & Notes
Something about an extended stay in Edmonton has brought out the very best in a Dallas offense that finished tied with Columbus for the fewest goals scored by a postseason participant (180). The Stars enter the new week ranked fourth in the league in goals per game among teams to qualify for the playoffs (3.38); Colorado still sits atop the heap at 3.83 goals per game.
And while the team’s depth players were pivotal in the first-round series win over the Calgary Flames, the top line has finally shown up against the reeling Avalanche. Jamie Benn, Alexander Radulov and Tyler Seguin have combined for 17 points in the series, with Radulov scoring the game-winning goal in two of Dallas’s three wins so far.
Colorado News & Notes
The Avalanche had hoped that the loss of starting netminder Philipp Grubauer wouldn’t torpedo their chances of reaching the Western Conference final – but it appears to have done just that. With Grubauer sidelined, backup Pavel Francouz has taken over and has surrendered 13 goals over the past three games, boasting an underwhelming .854 save percentage over that span.
And with Dallas doing plenty of damage with the man advantage in the series, discipline will be critical for a Colorado team that yielded six power-play opportunities in Game 4, with the Stars scoring on three of them. Forward Nazem Kadri was the guiltiest party Sunday night; he took a pair of minor penalties in the first period, and Dallas converted both PP chances.
Betting Pick: OVER 6 (-110)
Expect both teams to keep the good times rolling in Game 5, regardless of which team pulls out the victory. Discipline has been largely absent in this series, and both sides have dangerous power plays.
