The Key: I like the price we are getting on the Seattle Mariners as home underdogs to the Oakland A's tonight. Chris Flexen has been one of the most underrated starters in baseball for the Mariners, who are underrated as a team as well at 51-45 this season. Flexen is 6-2 with a 1.76 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in 10 home starts this year. He has gone 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA and 0.80 WHIP in his last 3 outings as well, yielding only 2 earned runs in 20 innings. Sean Manaea comes in struggling at 0-2 with a 5.29 ERA in his last 3 outings for the A's. Flexen is 9-1 against the money line when facing an AL team with a .320 OBP or worse this year. Take Seattle.

The SF Giants opened the week in Los Angeles for a four-game series with the hated Dodgers. The Giants won the series opener fairly easily on Monday (7-2) but the last two games have ended in dramatic fashion. LA's Will Smith hit a walk-off, three-run HR in the Dodgers' 8-6 win on Tuesday and then San Francisco's Wilmer Flores hit a go-ahead, two-run HR in the top of the ninth inning to lead the Giants to a 4-2 win on Wednesday. The Dodgers have won EIGHT straight NL West titles but as the two rivals take the field tonight in the finale of this four-game series, the Giants own a two-game lead in the division. San Francisco, which finished 14 game back of LA in last season's 60-game schedule, owns MLB's best record at 60-35 (.632)
Thursday's starting pitchers are Anthony DeSclafani (10-4, 2.78 ERA) for the Giants and Walker Buehler (10-1, 2.37 ERA) for the Dodgers. DeSclafani is having a career year, as he entered 2021 with a career 37-39 record. He not only is 10-4 so far this season but his ERA is 2.78 (career ERA is 4.07), his WHIP is 0.99 (career WHIP is 1.25) and his BAA is .201 (career BAA is .255). Taking on DeSclafani is Buehler, who in just a few seasons, has established himself as one the NL's top starters. Along with 2.37 ERA in 2021, he owns a 0.91 WHIP and a .192 BAA.
I have to 'LOVE' the defending World Series champions to earn a split in this four-game series by winning tonight, especially when one considers the following. DeSclafani is 0-2 with a 10.95 ERA in three starts against the Dodgers this season (Giants are 1-2), while going 10-2 with a 1.78 ERA against all other opponents. What's more, he's 1-7 with a 6.32 ERA in nine career starts vs Los Angeles, with his teams going 2-7. I guess one could say he's "due" for a good effort. However, why take a chance here, when he's opposed by Buehler? He has has DOMINATED San Francisco throughout his career, owning a 6-0 mark and a 2.17 ERA in 10 career outings (eight starts in which LA is 7-1). Enough said.

Thursday MLB Free play. My selection is on the 'under' between San Francisco and Los Angeles at 10:10 pm et on Thursday.
We saw a low-scoring contest between these two teams last night and I'm expecting more of the same on Thursday.
Anthony DeSclafani will take the ball for San Francisco. He has certainly struggled against the Dodgers over the course of his career but I think he'll have a short leash on Thursday night, noting also that he'll be pitching on just four days' rest. The last time he faced Los Angeles, DeSclafani was lifted from the game after allowing three earned runs in five innings. A similarly short outing wouldn't surprise me here and doesn't necessarily hurt our chances too much with the 'under'.
The Giants bullpen entered last night's action sporting a collective 3.44 ERA and 1.16 WHIP on the road this season. The concern is their inability to consistently close out games away from home, blowing 12 saves with 15 converted. Here, I'm not sure that's as much of an issue as I don't think they'll be nursing a lead.
Walker Buehler has essentially already taken his place as Dodgers ace, supplanting future Hall-of-Famer Clayton Kershaw. He has recorded a stellar 2.31 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 11 home starts this season. He checks in having allowed two earned runs or less while lasting at least six innings in three of his last four outings. Buehler has owned the Giants over the course of his career. This season alone he has faced them three times, giving up only two earned runs in 19 2/3 innings.
Behind Buehler is a Dodgers bullpen that owns a 3.08 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 16 saves converted and only six blown at home this season (entering last night's action). Take the under.
