Thursday NHL Free play. My selection is on New York over New Jersey at 7:05 pm et on Thursday.
We're able to back the Isles at a very reasonable price in Newark on Thursday night thanks in large part to the Devils coming off consecutive victories. That recent success actually works against New Jersey, however, noting that it has gone 0-10 the last 10 times it has played at home off consecutive wins over the last 2+ seasons, outscored by an average margin of 2.6 goals in that situation. Also note that the Devils are a miserable 7-23 in their last 30 games at home against division opponents, outscored by 1.2 goals on average along the way. Meanwhile, the Isles check in off a 5-2 loss in Minnesota on Sunday (we won with the Wild in that game). The final score doesn't tell the whole story as the Isles actually led that game 2-1 entering the third period, eventually giving up a pair of empty net goals in the final two minutes. Here, we'll note that New York has allowed just 2.0 goals on average after giving up five goals or more in their last game over the last 2+ seasons, outscoring opponents by 0.5 goals on average in that spot (20-game sample size). You would have to go back four meetings here in Newark to find the last time the Devils defeated the Islanders on home ice. Take New York.

The Philadelphia 76ers began the season dealing with the ongoing saga of Ben Simmons but opened an impressive 8-2. However, the Sixers took their second loss in a row Tuesday, falling 118-109 at home to the Milwaukee Bucks, after losing Monday (also at home) 103-96 to the Knicks. The Sixers continue to be without Joel Embiid (21.4-9.4-4.0), Tobias Harris (19.8-9.0-4.2), Matisse Thybulle and Isaiah Joe for health and safety protocols. Simmons remains absent for personal reasons and Seth Curry (16.8) missed Tuesday's game (foot), and it is unclear if he would be back to face the Raptors.
The Raptors began their season without bonafide All Star Pascal Siakam (21.4 & 7.2 and 22.9 & 7.3 the last two seasons) but he's returned the last two games, chipping in 11.5 & 5.5. He joins a pretty talented group in SF Anunoby (19.7 & 5.8), PG VanVleet (18.7-5.0-7.1), rookie PF Barnes (17.0 & 8.5) and SG Trent (15.1). Despite this cast of characters, the Raptors enter this contest on a THREE-game slide. The bet? Toronto snaps its skid and hands the depleted 76ers a THIRD straight loss.

I don't agree with the Philadelphia 76ers being favored over the Toronto Raptors tonight with all they are missing. The 76ers are without Simmons, Embiid and Thybulle. Plus, both Harris and Curry are questionable tonight.
I think the oddsmakers are factoring in the spot for the Raptors too much here. They'll be playing the 2nd of a back-to-back after an 88-104 loss to the Celtics last night. But the blowout nature of that defeat allowed their starters to not have to play too many minutes last night. And they had two days off prior to playing Boston.
I know the Raptors will be without Pascal Siakam tonight due to rest, but they were playing well without him before his return. They have lost two straight with him and three straight overall. They were 5-0 SU & 4-1 ATS in their previous five games.
The Raptors have actually done their best work on the road this season, going 4-1 SU & 4-1 ATS on the highway. Toronto is 6-0 ATS in its last six road games vs. a team with a winning record. It's not the greatest rest spot for the 76ers, either, as they will be playing their 6th game in 9 days. Being short-handed makes it worse for them. Bet the Raptors Thursday.

My “Cutting Room Floor” plays are the situations I considered the closest to being worthy of investment but did not make the “final cut” for my official plays today for subscribers. The last play I cut for Thursday action was with Under the Total in the game between the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Pittsburgh Panthers. North Carolina (5-4) looks to build off their 58-55 win against Wake Forest on Saturday. The Tar Heels have played three straight Overs while giving up 519.7 total Yards-Per-Game in that span. North Carolina has played 11 of their last 13 games Under the Total after playing at least three straight Overs — and they have played 21 of their last 30 games Under the Total after allowing at least 475 YPG in their last three games. The Tar Heels have also played 5 of their last 6 games Under the Total as an underdog getting 3.5 to 10 points. Pittsburgh (7-2) comes off a 54-29 win at Duke last week. The Panthers rushed for 220 yards in that game — and they have played 11 of their last 16 games Under the Total after rushing for at least 200 yards in their last game. And while it may be tempting to take the Over between these two high scoring teams, Pitt has played 10 of their last 13 games Over the Total with the number at 63 or higher. Take the Over. I won with the Predators last night. However, asking them to win two road games, in two nights, is asking a lot. That's particularly true when they're at the end of a long 6-game road trip and up against a tough opponent. This is the second time on this same road trip that Nashville played two games in two nights. In the first instance, after winning the front-end, the Preds lost that second game by a score of 5-2. The Blues allow 1.7 goals per game at home. The Preds allow 3.0 gpg on the road. With the Preds just 9-13 (-4.2) their last 22, after playing their previous three on the road, consider laying the price with the Blues.
