Today’s Gulfstream Park Hot List fullcard selections
    Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022
    Pegasus World Cup Day

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman
    Hot List Key:
    A:
A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worst
    * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.

1st race – (3) American Ninja won by five last time and finds another field he can handle here. (4) Yamato also won his last start and has the kind of stretch kick that can be effective here. (1) Light Fury may work out a good trip from the rail. (11) Town Classic adds Gaffalione and is worth a look.

2nd race – (1) Beyond Best stretches out to two turns for his second start and is working forwardly for this assignment. (9) Happy Boy Rocket should move forward in his second start for Mott. (10) Complete Agenda exits an improved effort at Tampa and can be a factor here. (6) Montauk Point returns from a layoff with Lasix and may be a contender.

3rd race - (8) Star Seeking makes her U.S. debut for Pletcher and deserves top billing. (11) Gladys exits a fifth in stakes company and could be the main rival. (9) Champagne Lady returned from a layoff with an impressive win and cannot be ignored. (2) Kate’s Kingdom returns to turf and might be more formidable this time.

4th race – (10) Swing Shift is working sharply toward his career debut and seems poised for a big effort. (5) Mackillop is another firster with interesting credentials. (9) Surpassing was second in his debut at Tampa and can be a contender here. (11) Positive Reviews adds blinkers after finishing third and second in his two starts. Should be a main threat.

5th race – The La Prevoyante Stakes, G3 - (4) Always Shopping won the Via Borghese last time and can bundle another stakes win in this spot. (6) Beautiful Lover was third behind the top pick last time but can be closer here. (2) Sister Otoole returns quickly and tries turf again. Will be dangerous on her best try. (8) Hungry Kitten rallied belatedly but may work out a better trip here.

6h race – (4) Frosted Over ships in from Woodbine with an excellent record on an all-weather surface and should prove best. (7) Telephone Talker ran huge in his Tapeta debut and could wind up as the main rival. (8) Order and Law may appreciate the switch to a synthetic surface. (2) Wolfie’s Dynaghost has an interesting pedigree for this surface.

7th race – The W. L. McKnight Stakes, G3 - (10) Abaan drew a miserable post but has enough speed to overcome it and lead throughout in this marathon turf test. (1) Temple may benefit from a ground-saving trip from the rail. (9) Glynn Country will be a force if he can duplicate his best try. (2) Oriental Trigger showed some success on turf in Chile and might perk up here.

8th race – The Inside Information Stakes, G2 - (8) Just One Time makes her first start for Cox and should notch a victory here. (2) A G Indy switches from turf and might respond with a big effort. (7) Jakarta comes off an impressive win and should not ignored. (3) Dance d’Oro has speed and may be tough to catch in this field.

9th race – The Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf, G3 - (4) Regal Glory won the Grade 1 Matriarch in her last start for Chad Brown and looks best in this spot. (1) Sweet Melania has speed and the rail and may be tough to reel in. (2) Wakanaka makes her U.S. debut and is very good hands with Mott. (8) Summer in Saratoga comes off a Fair Grounds stakes win and should be a contender.

10th race – The Fred Hooper Stakes, G3- (8) Speaker’s Corner has a big-time reputation and finally seems ready to live up to it. (4) Officiating won nicely at seven furlongs in a stakes and should welcome the added ground. (1) Fearless could get quite brave from the rail and be right there at the finish line. (9) Girolamo’s Attack had a rough trip in a Claiming Crown stakes but beat Fearless prior to that.

11th race – The Pegasus World Cup Turf, G1 - (2) Atone was a wide second in a prep for this stakes and just might work out a winning trip from an inside post. (6) Colonel Liam won this race last year but has been away since June and may need a race. (8) Sacred Life is usually right there at the finish and cannot be dismissed. (12) Never Surprised has a big burst of speed but the post may be tough to overcome.

12th race – The Pegasus World, G1 - (1) Knicks Go is the impending Horse of the Year after winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic. He has speed and the rail, which is a tough combo to beat in Gulfstream dirt routes, and seems on edge to end his career with back-to-back Pegasus wins. (4) Life Is Good has enough speed to make this a dazzling matchup. But can he beat Knicks Go? Chances are he’ll be second best. (3) Stilleto Boy may get a nice trip just off the leaders and could figure in the exotics. (6) Sir Winston gets back on dirt and would welcome a brutal pace duel between the favorites.

Keeneland Select Pick of the Day | January 29, 2022

Race 8 at Gulfstream Park | Saturday January 29 | Post Time 3:03 PM Eastern
Inside Information Stakes | Purse $200,000 | Seven Furlongs | Fillies and Mares, Four Years Old and Upward

Just One Time (8) is four for five in her career and in each of her four wins she never gave another horse a chance to beat her in the final eighth of a mile. She’s been rested since October when winning a stakes with a $122K purse and she’s now in the top hands of Brad Cox, with Rosario riding and with a steady series of workouts at Cox’ home base for the winter at Fair Grounds. Her last four workouts all share the same distance as stable star Knicks Go, who will be running in the Pegasus World Cup (race 12) on the card, and in two of those workouts Just One Time ran as fast, or faster, than Knicks Go. Based on that I’d say she’s in tip-top shape and as a newly turned four year old Just One Time could run a new career best effort to win this race.
A G Indy (2) is the other top win contender, although her career record of 4-4-2 in 13 races doesn’t compared to the 4-0-0 record in five races which Just One Time has put forth to date. Still, like Just One Time, A G Indy changes trainers since her last start, also last fall, and is now in the Todd Pletcher barn. Leading jockey Luis Saez rides and the work tab locally at Palm Beach Downs is very good. Except for her career debut way back in September of 2019, A G Indy has never raced on dirt, but her works on the surface and her breeding suggest that will not be a problem and there is no way I’d second guess Todd Pletcher because he’s in the Hall-of-Fame. Additionally, this mare was privately purchased since her last start, which was a win in a $200K stakes race. She’s got the right style to do well as she can rally from as far back as fourth and considering Family Time (1) and Dance d’Oro (3) have earned ALL seven of their combined wins leading from start to finish, stalkers like A G Indy and Just One Time should be the ones to beat.
Four Graces (5), Pacific Gale (6) and Jakarta (7) can be used in second on exacta tickets. Four Graces had a fantastic campaign as a three year old in 2020 winning four races including two stakes. She came back from eight months off last June and finished fourth then took another six months off and was second, beaten a nose, in an allowance race over the track on January 6. Pacific Gale won this race last year off a third place stakes effort in New York six weeks earlier. This time she comes back from a three and one-half month layoff and off a fifth place effort and she’s a seven year old now but she still seems to have a lot of heart. Jakarta ran the best race of her career last month at this distance in a 100K stakes race at Parx, her first on dirt after 13 races on turf and all-weather and her first after moving to the Trombetta barn. Irad Ortiz, Jr. rides her and although in eight of her nine wins she’s led from start to finish she did rate kindly to win a stakes race at the end of 2020 and Ortiz may be able to use stalking tactics from the outside in this situation.

Win bets: I will consider a strong win bet on Just One Time (8) at odds of 9 to 5 of more. I will consider a win bet for a slightly smaller amount on A G Indy (2) at odds of 2 to 1 or higher.
      Exactas:
      A G Indy (2) and Just One Time (8) over A G Indy (2), Four Graces (5), Pacific Gale (6), Jakarta (7) and Just One Time (8).
Box A G Indy (2) and Just One Time (8)

Keeneland Select Derby Prep Hotlist - January, 29, 2022

        Keeneland Select Derby Prep Hoitlist
        Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022
By Matt Shifman and Bob Ehalt

        The $750,000 Southwest (G3) – Oaklawn Park - Race 9

The Southwest (G3) drew a full field of twelve including the top 5 finishers from the Smarty Jones which was run four weeks ago to kick off the Kentucky Derby trail at Oaklawn Park. The Southwest field will vie for a purse of $750,000 and a share of the Derby qualifying points of 10-4-2-1 to the top four finishers.
        (2) Dash Attack was the winner of that Smarty Jones with a powerful late rally that led to an almost three-length victory. The son of Munnings is one of two horses that is the winner of his first two career starts. He is part of trainer Kenny McPeek’s barn that is loaded with Kentucky Derby prospects. Dash Attack also broke his maiden at Oaklawn Park. In the recent Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool 2, Dash Attack closed at odds of 34-1. (10) Newgrange is the other unbeaten horse in the field with a maiden win at Del Mar followed by a decisive front-end victory in the Sham (G3) at Santa Anita. Trainer Bob Baffert loves to ship to Oaklawn Park for these big purse 3-year-old races. Because Baffert is currently ineligible to enter horses at Churchill Downs, Newgrange is not eligible for Derby points and was not listed in the KDFW. Regardless of that, the son of Violence is a serious win contender in here. John Velazquez will travel to Arkansas to stay on board. (8) Barber Road has started five times with two wins and two seconds. He was second in his last two starts in stakes including a place-finish in the Smarty Jones where he ran into traffic in that 13-horse field. Ricardo Santana Jr. will get on board. (7) Ignitis has run seven times for D. Wayne Lukas including a third in the Smarty Jones after going six-wide heading into the stretch. He hit the board in 6 out of 7 starts.
        Betting strategy: Exacta box: 2, 10. Trifecta part-wheel: 2, 10 with 2, 6, 7, 8, 10 with 2, 6, 7, 8, 10.

Handicapped by The Walker Group at Golden Hour Wagers

              Always check program numbers.
Odds shown are morning line odds.

              Race 4 - Claiming - 8.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $14000 Class Rating: 76

GG - R9 - FOR FILLIES AND MARES FOUR YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. WEIGHT, 123 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $6,250.

              RECOMMENDED CHOICES
              # 4 MANGOTANGO 2/1
              # 3 BLUEGRASS SKY 8/1
              # 5 SHANGHAI MIST 5/2
I've got to go with MANGOTANGO. She should be given a chance given the strong speed numbers. Has been running solidly lately and will almost certainly be on the front end early on. Have to think this horse will run well following the quick turnaround. BLUEGRASS SKY - Must be carefully examined based on the respectable Equibase speed fig recorded in the last race. With a nice Equibase class figure average of 77, has one of the most favorable class advantages in this group. SHANGHAI MIST - I can't pass on this filly given one of the strongest jockey and conditioner combos on the grounds. When this jockey and trainer team up, players often make money.
