Sam Houston Race Park Selections for March 2, 2022 – Horse Racing Picks

    By Kyle E in Horse Racing — Mar 1st, 2022 10:28pm PST

Sam Houston Race Park Selections for March 2, 2022 – Horse Racing Picks

There are nine races for wagering, not including the standardbred, for wagering at the BetOnline racebook. The big show on the weekend is at Santa Anita Park. Santa Anita has six stakes races on Saturday.

    Industry Leading 9% Cashback!

The leading event is the $650,000 Santa Anita Handicap (Gr. 1), $500,000 Beholder Mile (Gr. 1), and $500,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile (Gr. 1) is expected to run, along with the $400,000 San Felipe Stakes (Gr. 2).

We’ll handicap the Santa Anita Park card this weekend in California. For today, we’re at Gulfstream Park and Sam Houston Race Park in Texas. Sam Houston has nine races with $196,000 in prize money to be won

Head below for our best San Houston Race Park picks on March 2, 2022.

Race 4 covers 7 furlongs for a $16,500 purse. Look for Factual and Lady Ave to put up good work in this one.

Factual is 5 for 20 in her career, with a better chance than recently down in class. She is 1st, 1st, 1st, 7th, 9th in her last five outings.

After a $36,300 win on December 11, Factual went 7th, 9th. In her most recent race, Factual finished 9th in a $38,000 event

That was too tough after finishing 7th for $39,000. This all happened after a $36,300 win by 2 ½ lengths. Down to $16,500 expect better results.

Lady Ave is on a heater with three straight wins and in seven of their previous eight attempts. In her most recent attempt, Lady Ave beat Lady Fly Like Jet by 4 lengths in a $37,000 assignment.

That was another impressive performance, which followed a $16,500 win. Lady Ave has to be worth a look in the fourth race.

    Post Time: 5:54 p.m. CST
    Distance:1 Mile
    Purse:$36,000

Race 5 is a mile on the turf for a $36,000 purse. Look at Honor Given and Kause I’m Devine with a big chance in this one.

Honor Given is winless in four outings, finishing 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd in four races. In her last race, Honor Given showed 3rd for a $39,000 purse.

That was a solid effort after showing 3rd on December 6 for a $33,000 purse. Honor Given has to be involved in this one in the final furlong.

Kause I’m Devine is winless in 18 races, but today could be the day. The mare is dropping in class after finishing 5th in the $75,000 Miss Bluebonnet Turf Stakes on February 19.

Kause I’m Devine was top-3 in five straight before that one. This looks like a good spot for the No. 4 to get back on track.

    Post Time: 1:33 p.m. EST
    Distance: 7 Furlongs
    Purse:$16,500

Race 6 is a 7-furlong race for a $16,500 purse. Expect Samurai Cause and Sir Smack to get involved here.

Samurai Cause is 7 for 29 in his career and is 1st, 1st, 6th in the last three outings. He was a back-to-back winner for a $13,500 and $36,300 prize.

In the most recent win, Samurai Cause beat Give It Everything by ¾ lengths in a $36,300 race. He came back on January 15 to finish 6th in a $38,000 event, so down in class Samurai Cause goes.

Sir Smack is 7 for 17 and finished 1st, 1st, 3rd, 1st, 3rd in his previous five attempts. In his last win, Sir Smack beat Gentrified by 10 ½ lengths for $22,000 on January 5.

He couldn’t follow up with another win, this time showing 3rd on February 2 for a $27,000 prize. Down to $16,500, it should be too easy for Sir Smack if he wants to run.

Gulfstream Park Selections for March 2, 2022 – Horse Racing Picks

      By Kyle E in Horse Racing — Mar 1st, 2022 7:27pm PST

Gulfstream Park Selections for March 2, 2022 – Horse Racing Picks

BetOnline goes into Wednesday with nine racecourses available for wagering this afternoon and evening. Charles Town and Turfway Park is running in the evening hours, while seven others earlier in the day.

      Industry Leading 9% Cashback!

There will be standardbred harness racing at night for wagering as well. The most notable race coming up this weekend is at Santa Anita Park. Santa Anita has a couple of big races on the card Saturday.

The running of the $650,000 Santa Anita Handicap (Gr. 1) and $400,000 San Felipe Stakes (Gr. 2) are on the schedule this Saturday. A total of four additional stakes races are on the docket.

We’ll start at Gulfstream Park in Florida on Wednesday. Gulfstream has $330,000 in prize money across nine races today. Head below for our best Gulfstream Park picks for March 2, 2022.
Taking Your Horse Race Betting to the Next Level
      Race 1
      (1) Be Naughty With Me
      +300 (3/1)
      (2) Mama Longlegs
      +1000 (10/1)
      (3) Dreaming of Audrey
      +140 (7/5)
      (4) Latte Lover
      +400 (4/1)
      (5) Sea Lioness
      +2000 (20/1)
      (6) Matcha
      +450 (9/2)
      (7) G T’s Blue Squall
      +1200 (1/1)

      Post Time: 1:05 p.m. EST
      Distance: 5 Furlongs
      Purse:$23,000

The first at Gulfstream Park is a 5-furlong assignment for $23,000 in prize money. Latte Lover and Dreaming of Audrey should be involved.

Latte Lover is winless in five races, finishing 4th, 3rd, 3rd, 3rd, 5th in five attempts. She is coming off finishing 5th on February 23 for a $21,000 prize.

That was discouraging after showing 3rd on January 16 in a $23,000 race. In a $23,000 race today, expect competitiveness.

Dreaming of Audrey is winless in 14 races in her career. She is with a new barn after finishing 7th on January 12. That was disappointing after placing 2nd by 1 ½ lengths a racer earlier.

Jose D’angelo should get the most out of this filly on Wednesday. Dreaming of Audrey looks dangerous now.

      +1200 (12/1)

      Post Time: 1:33 p.m. EST
      Distance: 1 Mile
      Purse:$37,000

The second assignment at Gulfstream is a mile on the turf for a $37,000 purse. Grey Streak and Max K.O. should be on the watchlist for a win.

Grey Streak has two wins in seven attempts, with his most recent strike on July 16. He had a win by a nose for a $52,000 victory, but has been held out since then.

In his most recent assignment, Grey Streak finished 8th in the $100,000 Tropical Park Derby on December 26. That was too tough, with Grey Streak dropping in class in this one.

      Max K.O. is 9 for 32 in his career and 1st, 1st, 2nd, 1st, 2nd, 5th, 4th in his last eight outings. He got to the winner’s circle on September 8 with a 2 ¾ length win for $100,000.

After finishing 4th on January 22 in the $75,000 Sunshine Turf Stakes, Max K.O. is dropping in grade. This looks much easier and Max K.O. has looked fine against much stiffer competition.

      +800 (8/1)

      Post Time: 4:37 p.m. EST
      Distance:1 Mile
      Purse:$36,000

The finale at Gulfstream Park is a mile for a $36,000 purse on the turf. This grass race will likely see Entwine and Basilia have a chance in the stretch run.

Entwine could be worth a look with nice value this afternoon. She has a win in 11 races, going in overseas at Newmarket on October 21, 2020.

Entwine hasn’t been a winner in the US, but the Irish-bred filly might have her day at Gulfstream Park. In her most recent appearance, Entwine finished 6th in a $61,000 event on January 13.
Expect her to be competitive on these terms and worth a look at a value price. Basilia will be there to present a tough bid, though.

Basilia is a winner in ten races in her career. She is 4th, 3rd, 2nd in her last three and getting closer. Basilia placed 2nd behind Agreetodisagree by a nose for $47,000.

This was after Basilia showed 3rd in a $36,000 event on October 8 at Santa Anita Park. Entwine could be considering at a good price, but Basilia should have this one at the wire.

Top Horse Racing Picks for Wednesday, March 2, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

The betting pendulum swung wildly at the three tracks I visited for my Wednesday horseracing picks—Delta Downs, Tampa Bay Downs, and Turfway Park.

Delta Downs gave us plenty of underdog choices—mostly with also-eligibles. Tampa Bay was a tad less forthcoming with the moneymakers. Turfway wound up giving us one of each—a solid favorite, a 4/1 underdog, and an 8/1 sleeper, though not in that order.

Remember to take a look at all the wagering options at one of our recommended online racebooks.

        Good luck!
        Wednesday’s Picks for Delta Downs

Let’s take a look at race four, a five-furlong allowance race on the dirt track for Louisiana-bred fillies and mares four years old and upward that have never won two races. I agree with the morning-line: Bet the 9/5 favorite, Brave City Girl, ridden by newcomer Vicente Del-Cid.

This four-year-old filly finished in the money seven of her ten career starts, winning one.
Brave City Girl has shown that she can compete at the post-graduate level, with more than half of her money finishes coming after her maiden victory last July.

Benjamin Zeno trains Brave City Girl for Zenon Racing Stables.

Incidentally, if you’re not eager to bet for such a minimal return, consider the 8/1 potential sleeper, Zeatrical, with Paulina Ramirez in the irons. Trained by Phillip Mark Dison for owner Caleb Millien, this six-year-old mare didn’t start competing until late last year, but she’s moneyed four of her five career starts, winning one—her most recent in February. Worth considering.

Race seven is a five-furlong allowance race on the dirt track for Louisiana-bred three-year-olds and upward that have never won three races. My money’s on the second-favored (at 3/1) All Our Time, piloted by veteran jockey Joel Dominguez.

This five-year-old gelding finished four of his five career starts in the money, winning two—his third maiden attempt a year ago, then an allowance race in November. In this eight-horse field, he’s got the stats.

Longtime horseracing veteran Keith G. Bourgeois trains All Our Time for owner-breeder B & L Thoroughbreds LLC.

Race eight is a 7-1/2 furlong allowance race for fillies and mares four years old and upward.

If the 5/1 underdog (and also-eligible) Moorac enters the starting gate, bet her and her jockey, Jose Andres Guerrero, to win.

Trained by Donald Melancon for owner Maxie Wayne Kitchings, Jr., the five-year-old Moorac moneyed seven of her 19 career starts, winning five, including her most recent claiming race here at Delta Downs.

If that doesn’t happen, then put your two dollars down on the 6/1 sleeper, Gee Gee, ridden by Casey Fusilier.

This four-year-old filly finished in the money seven of her eleven career starts, winning three. She’s trained by newcomer Edward L. Cox for owner Geral Dewitt.
My Wednesday Picks for Tampa Bay Downs

We’ll start on the dirt track with race two, a six-furlong claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I like the 5/2 morning-line favorite, Atlantic Princess, with Isaac Castillo aboard.

This four-year-old filly finished in the money eight of her 17 career starts, winning six. Even better—she’s won two of her three races in 2022. In a fairly evenly matched seven-horse field, she’s the one in the statistical spotlight.

With three decades in the horseracing business, Douglas Nunn trains Atlantic Princess for Winner Circle Stables, LLC.

We move to the turf course for race five, a five-furlong allowance optional claiming race for four-year-olds and upward.

If the 6/1 underdog also-eligible Minnesota Lucky, with Alonso Quinonez in the irons, enters the starting gate, bet the pair to win. This seven-year-old gelding moneyed 14 of his 33 career starts, winning eight, the most recent of which was in January. He’s trained by thirty-year horseracing veteran Douglas Nunn for Winner Circle Stables, LLC.

If that doesn’t happen, bet the second-favored (at 5/2) Skippy’s Strike, ridden by Jesus Lopez Castanon. Kerri Raven trains Skippy’s Strike for owner Roch Ruhland.

The eight-year-old gelding finished 19 of his 48 career starts in the money, winning seven.
And while I’m not recommending a wager here, find a way to show some respect for the third-favored Fox Rox. This will be the eleven-year-old gelding’s 114th career race, and as of last December, he still knew how to win them.

We’re back on the dirt track for race eight, a seven-furlong starter optional claiming race for three-year-old fillies. I’m backing the 4/1 second-favored She Nasty, ridden by Isaac Castillo.

This filly moneyed five of her eight career starts, winning four.

Although her most recent races have not been scrapbook-worthy, She Nasty’s sixth-place finish (in a field of nine) in the Gasparilla Stakes (Black Type) in January shows she has the stamina for seven furlongs.

With nearly thirty years in the horseracing business, Kathleen A. Guciardo trains She Nasty for Heehaw Racing.
        Wednesday Picks for Turfway Park

Let’s start on the all-weather track for race three, a one-mile claiming race for four-year-olds and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the second-favored (at 3/1) Christian C, piloted by Erik Barbaran.

Extensively campaigned at the stakes level (though not very successfully), this nine-year-old gelding has the best statistics in this eight-horse field: 28 money finishes in 36 career starts, 13 of them wins.

He most notably won the Black Tie Affair Handicap (Black Type) at Arlington International Race Course in 2018 (he finished third in the 2019 running).
Still need a convincer? Christian C has moneyed his last seven races, winning four of them.

Christian C is trained by owner Michael L. Reavis.

Race seven is a six-furlong claiming race on the all-weather track for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I like the 8/1 sleeper, Distinctive Flower, ridden by Rafael Mojica, Jr.

This seven-year-old mare moneyed 21 of her 36 career starts, winning seven. In this otherwise unimpressive field of ten, she’s the statistical standout. She notably finished a neck behind the winner of the Vivacious Handicap (Black Type) last July at Belterra Park.

Newcomer Chadwick A. Peach trains Distinctive Flower for Prodigy Racing, LLC.

Race eight is a six-furlong claiming race on the all-weather track for fillies and mares three years old and upward that have never won two races. I’m buying a win ticket on the 2/1 morning-line favorite, Stacy Attack, with top jockey Rafael Bejarano aboard.

This four-year-old filly finished in the money five of her nine career starts, winning one—her graduation victory in December. Of her last five starts, she moneyed four of them.

Ranked among the top 100 trainers for wins for the past five years, Genaro Garcia trains Stacy Attack for Southwest Racing Stables Inc.

Gulfstream Park Picks: Beginning of major week of racing, March 2
          By J.N. Campbell

Gulfstream Park Picks - Wednesday, March 2, 2022

          Race 1: 3-6-1-4
          Race 2: 4-2-1-3
          Race 3: 3-2-6-1
          Race 4: 5-6-3-1
          Race 5: 4-6-1-8
          Race 6: 4-7-8-6
          Race 7: 8-3-4-2
          Race 8: 2-7-10-6
**Most Likely Winner: In The Union #5 (Race 4)**
**Best Value: Mandate #4 (Race 2)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 4: In the Union #5, 7/2):

Todd Pletcher has a particularly strong record at Gulfstream Park this time of year, and when he enters an uncoupled entry, I always like to look at the higher-priced, M/L runner. This colt by Union Rags is a well-bred 3-yr-old, and we know Shadwell Farm is a powerhouse when it comes to their processes. The Mathis Stable expects great things from this one, and Pletcher sent him to Tampa for his 1st pair of races. The last one on 30 January was a similar OC75k, and it had Emmanuel drawn-in. That’s another budding talent of Pletcher’s (entered in Saturday’s G2 Fountain of Youth S. @GP), and I like the fact they competed against one another. Adding Tyler Gaffalione to the mix in this deeper route is a plus, and I think stretching this one out is a superb idea. The colt is rounding into shape, and so is the HOF-er’s record during the Meet.

          Wager: $100 Win, #5

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 2: Mandate #4, 6/1):

Here is a seriously classy runner for trainer Yvon Belsoeur that has some major potential to win in a spot like this one. For most of 2021, this son of Blame was competing for Wayne Potts on the Belmont-SPA circuit in Clm25k open company. He did not have any wins to show for it, but routing against the likes of tough foes like Soulmate, Smile Bryan, and Clear Vision cannot be easy. The ownership then switched to Rob Johnston, and all he did was win with the then 4-yr-old. The capstone over 2 races was a quality score in the Artie Schiller $150k at odds of 45/1. Now in the keep of Belsoeur, the gelding is dropping out of the McKnight (G3), which was an extreme distance and class test at 1½. Coming back to the ALLW25k racing is the proper move, and tabbing Jose Ortiz to ride … that’s a deal. I am hoping we can get 6/1! Bet this one …

          Wager: Graduated Wager, WPS, $100 Bankroll, #4 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Dirt, 6½, ALLW54k, 3 FL Breds):

This Florida bred sprint for 3-yr-olds is going to be quite a frenzy, as there is a fair amount of speed signed on in here. When it comes to a top selection, I am pretty keen on Rohan Crichton’s Yes I’m a Beast #8. Off-the-claim, this one is a beast, and comes to his new trainer with a 3-race win streak. I don’t see why this gelding by The Big Beast cannot keep that going here. He gets Luis Saez, an expert rider, and Crichton’s numbers in spots like these are solid. His early speed is a weapon, as he breaks from that outside post. In 9 lifetime events, he has not dipped his hoof into state co. … I think his main rival will certainly be Ed Plesa’s Klugman #3. Here is a frontend burner that just smoked his competition in a state bred MSW53k back on 11 February. Rafael Hernandez just pointed him out of the gate, and the son of Practical Joke … he went. Winning by 13-lengths is not easy to do, and neither is posting a speed fig. like he did. But I question whether he can replicate that performance, even though the jockey-trainer angle here is strong. I want to use him … I also like the look of Juan Alvarado’s Clapton #4, a colt by Brethren that has deep experience in Gulfstream races like this one. Sure, he has had mixed results, but I don’t see why this one couldn’t at the very least hit-the-board. Let’s use all 3 of these sprinters because this could be anyone’s game. Should be a fun one …

Sam Houston Picks: Match-up, Lady Ave v. First Empress in R4 on March 2
            By J.N. Campbell

Sam Houston Race Park Picks - Wednesday, March 2, 2022

            Race 1: 1-5-6-4
            Race 2: 7-1-5-6
            Race 3: 7-4-3-8
            Race 4: 1/1A-5-7-4
            Race 5: 7-3-4-5
            Race 6: 2-3-6-5
            Race 7: 4-7-2-6
            Race 8: 4-1-6-3
            Race 9: 1-3-8-6
**Most Likely Winner: Circle Back Girl #7 (Race 2)**
**Best Value: Imabadger #4 (Race 7)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 2: Circle Back Girl #7, 8/5):

Danny Caldwell was the leading owner once again during Remington Park’s 2021 Meet. His success has yet to translate to Sam Houston though. In 44 starts during the SHRP Meet, he only has 3 wins. In his defense, 8 seconds and 3 third place finishes are not too shabby. The point is, he has the ability to get hot at any time. His go-to trainer onsite, Martin Villafranco, does too. In this Non-winners of 2 “Claiming Game” race for 3-yr-old fillies, these connections have the winner. An Oklahoma bred by Carpe Diem, their entry is dropping out of much tougher company (AOC50k). This probably is the right level, and it will help that Floyd Wethey Jr. once again gets the call. Caldwell has the ability to catchup quickly, especially with a good size string of runners on hand. This one is getting claimed btw … betcha …

            Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #7

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 7: Imabadger #4, 12/1):

If you are after a major dose of value on this Wednesday card, then look no further than this mare by Preferred Issue that is bred, owned, and trained by Dallas Keen (4/17 24% @Sam ‘22). She is lightly-raced (to say the least) for her age (5-yrs-old), and was impressive sprinting on debut last time at SHRP on 16 February. Keen rolls her back quickly, and that is a sign of confidence. I know Rodolfo Guerra does not get the opportunity to ride on the green all that often, but when he gets together with Green, they can do some damage. Ratcheting up in class from a MSW36k into this spot will not be easy, but this field is not the toughest in my opinion … layoff runners, poor ALLW Co. efforts, and such, just litter this race. Let’s take a shot …

            Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #4 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

            Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 4: Dirt, 7F, St.Opt.Clm10k, F&M 4+):

To my eye, the “feature” race on the Wednesday late afternoon card is this race … a Starter OC for older females. Starting deep from the backstretch chute, it is once again going to be a hoof-to-hoof match between Steve Asmussen (21 wins) and Karl Broberg (25 wins). The 2 trainers are once again dueling for the conditioning title, and it is currently a tight race. Asmussen has an uncoupled entry in this spot, with one half being the ever-dependable Lady Ave #5. The Texas bred by Bind has only lost 1 time since she ran at the Remington Meet back in late August. That is an impressive 7 wins total. Her last out score in an ALLW37k was another brilliant short-priced victory. Ridden by Stewart Elliott (2nd in the jockey standings at the Meet), she has that dangerous kick that can be unleashed at any point. Taking her on in a spot like this one might not seem sensible, but when I saw his adversary, Broberg, entering with the coupled entry of First Empress #1 and Factual #1A, I realized we are going to have quite a match. Both of these runners have different attributes … the former continues to work well, and has a pair of wins already around the Sam oval. The latter is moving down from AOC country, after some less than stellar performances. Let’s not forget though, that this filly was excellent up in OKC, and has the ability to be tactical. With Ry Eikleberry out, the Dallas-based trainer turns to ace rider Rey Gutierrez, who is having quite a renaissance since he rode at the ’21 Meet. His year was capped by his 1st “grade stakes” win, which led to a Breeders’ Cup appearance at Del Mar. Broberg has options to scratch one of these entries … and he very well could do that. I like either of these females, and think they have a definite chance to upset Asmussen’s ace. Here is the play … what a race this is going to be!

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Cold, 1/1A over 5

Rocket Picks : Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs for March 2, 2022
                By: Aaron Halterman

It’s a new week of action! For the free pick 4, we will head to Gulfstream Park today, which has another good Wednesday card. We will also be covering Tampa Bay Downs today for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s kick off the week in a good way!

Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Gulfstream Park:

                Gulfstream Park March 2, 2022

                Race 5: Claiming

#1 Ukiyo moves back over to the synthetic surface today, which is where she broke her maiden two starts back. #8 Mount Sinai was a solid second at this level last time out, and seems to enjoy running over this synthetic surface.

                Race 6: Allowance Optional Claiming
                freestar

#6 Into the Sunrise has performed well at this level in the past at different tracks, and should fit in well with this group today. #2 Gretzky the Great takes a nice drop down in class for this race after taking on stakes company in his last several races.

                Race 7: Allowance

#2 Stormy Pattern will look to make it two in a row in this race after a solid gate to wire victory last time out over this track. #3 Klugman will also look to make it two straight wins today after an ultra-impressive maiden score las time out.

                Race 8: Claiming

#2 Basilia runs off of the claim for Maker today after nearly defeating similar horse lat time out at Del Mar. #1 Runaway Rockette will take a big drop down in class to the claiming ranks today, which should make her dangerous for Mott.

                THE TICKET

                $.50 Pick 4 (Races 5-8) 1,4,6,8 / 2,4,6,7 / 2,3,8 / 1,2 – $48

Race 2: #3 All You Know, #6 Dragon Pride, #12 Diamond Star, #7 Heroic Champion
                  Race 3: #4 Royal Bomb, #5 Super Ten, #6 Zone D, #9 Viva Hunter
Race 4: #2 Pakistan Friend, #1 Nothing Impossible, #10 Hyperion Tree, #5 Lucky Diamond
Race 5: #11 Valiant Elegance, #2 Gallant Waking, #4 Ice Legend, #7 Blissful Star
Race 6: #10 Joyful Genius, #2 Regency Star, #4 Super Mission, #9 Shadow Runner
Race 7: #11 Chater Pins, #1 Ever Laugh, #5 Viva Popcorn, #12 Happy Jai Jai
                  Race 8: #10 Nothing New, #8 Nicconi County, #3 Atullibigeal, #11 Forte
Race 9: #11 Happy Daily, #12 Lucky Sweynesse, #2 Toronado Phantom, #9 Prance Dragon

Race 1: Bulkeley Handicap (2nd Section)

#2 Sunshine Warrior is competitive in this grade. He mixes his form but a step down to this class should spark sharp improvement. Expect a big run with Jerry Chau engaged. #4 Presence is getting close to a first win in Hong Kong. He draws well and is favoured here. #6 Storm Legend turned his form around to log a fast-finishing second. He’s open to further advancement with Joao Moreira up. #1 Amazing One Plus has the ability but has refused to win several times. Still, there is the talent there.

                  Race 2: Wuhu Handicap

#3 All You Know is not without his chance here. He steps out off a dangerously low mark in Class 5, and he is armed with gate one. He’s the one to beat here with the right run. #6 Dragon Pride is in career-best form. Still, he must do it again and this field has several capable types. #12 Diamond Star is edging closer and closer to a first win in Hong Kong. The light weight and Joao Moreira gives him his chance to get on the board. #7 Heroic Champion is not without a hope here. He can find the right spot throughout.

Race 3: Bulkeley Handicap (1st Section)

#4 Royal Bomb is capable, but he’s mixed his form since his last win. Still, his most recent run over this course and distance caught the eye. Alexis Badel hops up and he looks ready to win again. #5 Super Ten should find the front under Blake Shinn. He’ll look the winner at some stage. #6 Zone D is after back-to-back wins. He’s in red-hot form and is expected to be a factor once more. #9 Viva Hunter slots in light and pairs favourably with Joao Moreira. He can use the inside gate to his advantage.

                  Race 4: Po Loi Handicap

#2 Pakistan Friend has a bit of class. He races well over these distances and is expected to roll forward from the draw to take up the running out in front. He’ll make his own luck. #1 Nothing Impossible steps down in grade. Expect a sharp turnaround in form with this guy, especially with Zac Purton hopping up to ride. #10 Hyperion Tree is lightly raced but showing talent. Don’t discount. #5 Lucky Diamond is doing nothing wrong. He’s in solid form and his good fortune can continue.

Race 5: Chatham Handicap (2nd Section)

Expect #11 Valiant Elegance rolls forward to try and pinch this. He’s racing well and has proven himself on both the turf and dirt in the past. Good gate is a plus and Lyle Hewitson knows him well. He’s the one to run down. #2 Gallant Waking set the track alight last start with a rousing debut win. He’ll be thereabouts. #4 Ice Legend draws well and was a winner two starts ago. He’s in sound form and is expected to be competitive again. #7 Blissful Star is lightly raced but on the improve. Strong booking of Zac Purton warrants respect.

Race 6: Chatham Handicap (1st Section)

#10 Joyful Genius has been knocking on the door for some time now. He’s doing everything right except winning and once again, he looks like a real chance. Luke Ferraris knows him well and this contest is well within his grasp. #2 Regency Star is after back-to-back wins. He draws favourably and remains in Class 4 which suits. #4 Super Mission is in form. He only needs to offset the awkward gate to be competitive. #9 Shadow Runner won well two runs ago. He can bounce back.

                  Race 7: Gillies Handicap

#11 Chater Pins is closing in on a first win. He’s gone close at times and with even luck, coupled with no weight, he shapes as the one to beat. #1 Ever Laugh has the class-edge, favourable draw and Zac Purton to his advantage. He’ll take a power of beating. #5 Viva Popcorn is chasing a hat-trick of wins. He draws a touch wide but gets his chance again with Jerry Chau booked. #12 Happy Jai Jai rises in grade following two very, very good wins. He’s a light weight chance at the bottom of the handicap.

Race 8: Baker Handicap (1st Section)

#10 Nothing New has done well since switching yards to trainer Douglas Whyte – twice narrowly missing by under a neck. Alexis Badel hops back up here and he gets his chance. #8 Nicconi County steps out on debut. He trialled well at Sha Tin alongside Sky Field and does appear ready to perform first-up for Caspar Fownes. #3 Atullibigeal steps out for his second start in Hong Kong. He looks like he has ability and is worth consideration. #11 Forte is racing well and gets his chance again. Don’t discount.

Race 9: Baker Handicap (2nd Section)

#11 Happy Daily has a stack of ability and he looks well placed under these conditions to win. The wide gate is a slight concern but even still, his ascent up the handicap looks far from over. He’s a nice horse. #12 Lucky Sweynesse scored with plenty in hand on debut. He gets in light and looks a chance to upstage better credentialed and more experienced rivals here. #2 Toronado Phantom is nothing short of consistent. He’s a danger again. #9 Prance Dragon is in winning form. Don’t discount.

Hong Kong Preview: Lucky Sweynesse to stay unbeaten
                      Alastair Bull

#12 Lucky Sweynesse can keep his unbeaten record intact despite a rise in class for his second Hong Kong assignment March 2.

The New Zealand-bred three-year-old steps up to Class 3 company in the 1,200-meter (about six furlongs) Baker Handicap at Happy Valley, three weeks after easily winning his debut on the same track.

Lucky Sweynesse’s 2 1/2-length victory earned him a nine pound jump in the ratings but it looked a fair call and he appeals as a horse that has a good future in Hong Kong.

The only significant negative is that Zac Purton, who rode him on debut, won’t be aboard this time, but he loses nothing in horsemanship with Joao Moreira taking the reins. From gate 5 he should be on the speed and get a nice run.

Purton will be aboard Lucky Sweynesse’s main rival on form, #2 Toronado Phantom. He produced an impressive performance to win in Class 3 company Feb. 6, coming from near last to win easily despite a slow tempo up front.

The son of Toronado has won three of his seven starts and should get every opportunity from gate four.

For multiple players, #1 Shining Gem should be kept in mind. He has run well in Class 2 most of this season without winning. Jockey Harry Bentley should be able to get a midfield spot just off the fence from gate 8 and come home strongly.

#9 Prance Dragon and #11 Happy Daily are both in very strong form, though both have wideish draws to deal with and the latter is racing at the tricky Happy Valley circuit for the first time. They should be included in exotics, as should Hong Kong debutant #8 Ace One, a three-time winner in Australia when known as Levi’s Storm.

1/ST Saturday in March: Gulfstream/Santa Anita Post Draw Reaction

                        February 28, 2022 | By Jeremy Plonk

Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita jointly present the 1/ST Saturday in March with 15 stakes races slated to be run at the two iconic racetracks. It’s Fountain of Youth Day in South Florida, while it’s Big ‘Cap Day in Southern California. The two stuffed undercards fill out a mega stakes lineup that should prove to be one of the most exciting racing days of 2022. Entries were drawn for both full cards Monday.

Horseplayers on the 1/ST BET and Xpressbet platforms can take advantage of several 1/ST Saturday in March wagering promotions, including up to a $10 free bet on both the all-dirt Coast to Coast stakes pick five and the all-turf stakes Coast to Coast pick five (each featuring a low 12% takeout and $1 minimum). Fans can also enter the 1/ST Saturday in March free sweepstakes, where if you’re lucky enough to pick all 15 stakes winners, you could earn a life-changing, $5 million payday.

Gulfstream’s nine 1/ST Saturday in March stakes include a field of 12 (with an also-eligible) for the Grade 2 $400,000 Fountain of Youth, featuring Triple Crown hopefuls Rattle N Roll and the unbeaten Emmanuel. The Fountain of Youth pace looks to be rapid with key speed contenders drawing to the inside. Saturday’s Gulfstream undercard highlights feature eight runners in the Grade 2 $200,000 Gulfstream Park Mile (Speaker’s Corner and Fearless re-matched) and 11 entrants in the Grade 2 $200,000 Mac Diarmida on turf (led by eight contenders from trainers Mike Maker and Todd Pletcher).

Santa Anita’s six 1/ST Saturday in March stakes include the Grade 1 $650,000 Santa Anita Handicap, where last year’s runner-up Express Train leads a field of eight as he seeks a third straight victory. The Grade 2 $400,000 San Felipe for Triple Crown aspirants lured San Vicente-winning speedster Forbidden Kingdom among a field of seven. The Grade 1 $500,000 Beholder Mile, featuring Evoutante and As Time Goes By, as well as the Grade 1 $500,000 Kilroe Mile, which boasts a big field of 12, provide a rousing supporting lineup.

CNBC will broadcast the 1/ST Saturday in March in a two-hour program from 4-6 pm ET. Nick Luck will be onsite at Gulfstream, while 1/ST BET handicapper Eddie Olczyk highlights the coverage from Santa Anita.

                          Penn National - Race #7
                          Picks Notes
#5 Movie Score She doesn't have a massive finishing gear, but she tends to stay on at one pace, and that might serve her well in this spot as she gets back around two turns. She has some okay form going long here last summer and should land a great trip.
#1 Queen Rosemary She's a reliable finishing type, and it's easy to see her getting a pretty cozy trip from the rail draw. Have to admire how consistent she has been of late, but she might find one or two of these a bit too tough here.
#3 Tomarie She ran very well to land an allowance at Parx last out, and she's a good fit right back if she's able to bring something similar. That said, she's not the most consistent kind, and I worry she's overbet.
Race Summary Movie Score might get the perfect run of the race while sitting up close on the stretch out, and I think her two local routes here were deceptively good last year.

                          Penn National - Race #3
                          Picks Notes
#5 Sleepy N Joyful She's not going to be a price here, but she looks like a logical chalk who can be tough to get past. She figures for another perfect trip while pressing the pace, and she just beat a few of these when trying this level last out.
#4 Above the Line She tends to fade late, but there is not a ton of pace signed on in this one, and maybe the top choice leaves her alone long enough for her to stay for a piece of this.
#9 Show Maid Think she has a little claim on a piece of this underneath, as she occasionally shows a bit of midpack pace, and she might be able to grind along late at a nice price off the dull run last time out.
Race Summary Sleepy N Joyful should be able to handle this group at a short kind of number, but Above the Line and Show Maid both offer some price appeal to fill out the underneath spots.

                          Penn National - Race #6
                          Picks Notes
#1 Grey Quest Think this guy is a really clear single in the later part of the card, as he's a good fit with this kind and appears to have a pretty significant pace advantage over the rest of these. Can't see anyone being able to go with him early today.
#4 My Man Georgio He showed a bit of life when dropped in at this level for the first time, but I worry he's not going to get the right kind of setup for his finishing effort today. Capable player is a good fit here, but if the top pair are both relatively short prices, the pace has the edge.
#6 Artie Chiller His form has slowly been getting a bit better since dropping back in with maiden claiming company, and I suppose he's a chasing threat to the top choice and might appreciate a cleaner go today.
Race Summary Grey Quest does his best work when he's able to find the front, and that should almost certainly be the case today. Thinking he'll show something better here than he did last out when chasing and tiring a bit late.

                            Picks Notes
#4 PRETTY GORGEOUS Held up okay through solid fractions at Miami Valley, gets class relief.
#8 MISTER MARVALOUS Chased the 3-1 winner around the track, post the concern.
#3 AIM FOR GLORY Far back from post 7 on drop to this level, gets second-time Lasix.
Race Summary Pretty Gorgeous paced evenly behind the favorites and into decent fractions on a 'good' Miami Valley track. He has a poor record but still looms a factor in this field. Play a 3-4-8 exacta box.

                            The Meadows - Race #2
                            Picks Notes
#1 ARMANI Competed in mostly 2yo stakes, gets Lasix for 3yo debut.
#7 BETTERINPINEHURST Led until last stride despite broken equipment.
#6 L-T TURBO Raced up-close and finished in money in three straight.
Race Summary Armani was heavily-bet in his only non-stakes try as a 2-year-old, only to go off stride. He draws the rail for his return from a five-month layoff for a high percentage barn. Play 1-6 and 1-7 exactas.

                            Miami Valley - Race #3
                            Picks Notes
#6 LITTLE T Could sit good stalking trip, can factor on best, price attached.
#1 DRINKS ALL AROUND Chased even-money winner, held third.
#2 ANNE WITH AN E Been a non-factor at this level, moves outside in.
Race Summary Little T takes on several male rivals after she was outrun from post 8 last week. But she only got beat a length and change in 1:56.4 in her prior two starts, making her a viable longshot play in a speed-laden field. Bet on her to win and place.

                              Purse:$16,500
