          Wunderdog

          Tues. (1-4) (-5.9*) YTD (335-346-5) (-83.0*)

Game: Kansas City at Detroit (7:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Kansas City +165 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 3.3)

You have to look at the underdog Royals again, a team that has won two in a row and is 4-3 in their the last seven games, winning as a dog of +152, +160, +185 and +160. They were a big dog yesterday and smashed the Tigers, 9-5 - a wire-to-wire win with 18 hits. Sparkplug Alex Gordon matched a career high with four hits as they got at least one hit from every starter. This offense has been good all season at No. 11 in runs scored, No. 5 in batting average and No. 9 in on-base percentage. The Royals are 4-1 in their last five vs. a team with a winning record. This offense will be able to hit Detroit starter Doug Fister (6-13), who has marginal stuff and has allowed 23 hits his last three starts (17+ innings). The Tigers are 1-4 in their last five home games vs. a team with a losing record and the road team is 4-1 in umpire Phil Cuzzis last five games behind home plate vs. Kansas City. Play on the Royals.

Game: Florida at New York (7:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Florida -100 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 2)

It’s always wise to look for hot pitchers or under the radar pitchers and Javier Vazquez of the Marlins fits both of those categories. He had a lousy first three months of the season, but has been on a tear, allowing 3 runs or less in eight of his last 10 starts. He’s been a strikeout machine as well, fanning 10 or more in three of those starts. Vazquez was excellent his last start against the Reds, striking out 11 batters over seven innings and allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks. Since the All-Star break, Vazquez has a 3.50 ERA with 54 strikeouts and just 12 walks in 51.1 innings, looking like his old NL East-dominating self. The team is 4-1 in his last five road starts. After playing a double header yesterday, it would help to have someone on the hill who can throw innings, which Vazquez can, but NY Mets starter Mike Pelfrey (7-10, 4.60 ERA) does not, averaging five innings his last five starts. In his last two starts, he has a 5.80 ERA, giving up 17 hits and 6 walks in 11 innings! The Mets are 0-6 in the last six starts he’s made on five days of rest. Play the Marlins.

Game: Washington at Atlanta (7:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Washington +175 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 3.5)
Pick: 2 units on Game Total OVER 9 -105 (risk 2 to win 1.9)

Washington is a big dog here, but is not playing as badly as this current skid might suggest, losing by 1 run in two of the last six games and 2 runs in a pair of them. Prior to this skid they won four of five games, including twice as a dog of +120 and +185. Reliable veteran Livan Hernandez goes here, with few walks allowed and a solid 3.31 ERA against the Braves in 16 innings this season, allowing 18 hits and only one free pass. Washington is 5-1 the last six times in game one of a series, as well as 4-1 the last five times Hernandez has opened up a series. Atlanta has no urgency to play well, as they’ve pretty much locked-up a wild card slot. They’ve lost two of the last three games - all as a favorite, including a 6-0 defeat the last game, ending a long road trip. This offense ranks just No. 17 in baseball in runs scored and No. 24 in on-base percentage. Starter Jair Jurrjens had a great start to the season, but is not the same pitcher with a 1-2 record and a 5.19 ERA his last three starts. Play the Washington Nationals. Also take the OVER here. Washington averages just 3.8 runs per game on the season overall, but vs. right-handed pitchers, that climbs to 4.0. In night games, they average 4.1 per game. And, in division games, the Nats are 30-17 OVER on the season. When facing teams this year that allow less than 3.9 runs per game, Washington is 20-15 to the OVER including 15-5 in their last 20. And, as a big road dog (+150 or greater), they are 15-5 OVER this season. Meanwhile, Atlanta is 13-3 OVER this season after a big loss by 5+ runs. Take the Nats and the OVER here.

A pair of attacking, up-tempo offensive teams clash in this one. Phoenix has scored 92 and 86 points the last two games without playing much defense, giving up 95 and 79 points. The good news is that they take on a Tulsa team that is the worst in the WNBA, focusing solely on offense. Despite a terrible record, Tulsa has won two in a row because the offense carried the day with 77 and 83 points, led by Sheryl Swoopes. Of course, at 5-23 there’s no incentive to play defense and they haven’t, as they’re on a 2-0 run to the OVER. The OVER is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings between these teams in Tulsa and I see an up-tempo game from start to finish. Play the OVER the total.
