Well I'm pretty sure my protein shit helps. I have no hard proof, but when I work out and am on a full nutritional and supplemental regimen I get bigger and stronger.

Have you ever worked out for any period of time while not on supps? They obviously help, I just can't say whether any one particular supp taken in the past helped. FWIW, I have never taken supps, aside from the myoplex which I really used as a meal replacement. Gaining is no problem for me, cutting is the problem.

The only time was when I was basic training for the Army and that's obviously a different kind of working out. You eat three meals a day and that's it. I think I went from about 117 to 126 pounds and stayed lean. I had a really hard time getting past that 126 lb mark when I got back, though.

I don't think supplements are magic at all, but I have to use them to get the necessary calories and protein in to keep putting on muscle.

So you have never compared lifting + supps to just lifting. So how is it that you are so sure you are getting a benefit from them? You get bigger and stronger, yes... but you put on 10 pounds of muscle in 6 weeks without even lifting in basic training. That's pretty serious adding right there.

also, [insert mandatory poke at weighing 117 pounds].

I've compared just lifting and eating normally (three meals a day, not really paying too much attention to it) with lifting and eating and taking supps and there is a definite difference. If I just started going to the gym without any regard to my eating habits then I might put on a few pounds but then my gains would stall out after two weeks or so because there's just not enough calories or protein for further gains.

In the Army I think my weight was so low when I went in that it just didn't take much to put on a few pounds. But like I said, after I hit about 126 pounds I had a really hard time getting past that. In fact, I was 18 when I went to basic training. 5 years later I remember walking into a 24 Hour Fitness and them weighing me and I was only 114 lbs.

I finally got past the 130lb mark when I was 25. And a few years after that I was in the 150s, although like I've said it hasn't been all muscle.

But ideally, I think I'd like to be about 180 @ 10% bodyfat.

Oh, that's what I was asking, I thought you said you never lifted without supps.

180? you would have to be like a hulk to achieve that IMO. You would have to be seriously developed for that shit, good luck.

I haven't done it in years because I learned early on that you can't eat 1500 calories a day and expect to get bigger.

And I think 180 is quite doable. I got as high as 164 when I was in California at about 17% bodyfat.

So, you basically have to gain at least another 30-35 pounds of muscle. It can be done, obviously, just saying, you are going to have to lift some heavy stuff repeatedly. That is a complete body overhaul, just saying.

I weighed myself a couple of days ago and I was at 159.7.

I haven't taken my bodyfat %, but I'd guess it's about what it was last time I measured, which was about 17%, according to my calipers.

I know you are going to disagree with me and I'm not even gonna reply back when you do, but gaining 21 lbs while dropping 10% in body fat in 365 days is going to take some chemical enhancement.

                                There, I said it.
