In continuing my trend of posting things that no one cares about... Bendo is competing in the 181lb division of the AZ BJJ Open at Brown Belt. He competed in the Mundials last year in the same division as Nate Diaz and got Bronze. I think that the 159 division though. There is only one other guy in his division, so he is probably competing at his walking around weight.

It is a local/regional tourney. Not a big tourney, but not what I would call small town or small time. It is just that the higher divisions (really anything over blue) really start thinning out in local tourneys. He is in the adult division brown belt. There probably are not that many brown belts under 30 in the area. But that is how it is a lot of the time. Usually, purple belt is the highest division at most bjj tourneys. It is pretty rare to get a brown or black belt fight at a local tourney. The last time I competed at a tourney in Indianapolis (probably the biggest tourney in Indy) there were 8 purple belts, no brown belts, and 1 black belt (who fought a judo candy cane belt). That's how it is.

It is the same way at wrestling tournaments. I got into the finals of Indiana State FS tournament in 1997 by winning 2 matches. Local wrestling tourneys may only have 2 or 3 guys in each division. There are too many divisions for local tourneys. It makes sense for the national tourneys, but the local tourneys try to keep all the same divisions, and it thins it out too much. At least in bjj, there is the absolute division in the local comps.
