I think the moral of the story here is that practice makes perfect and that the more a motion is performed, the more small subtle tweaks are made and these tweaks are committed to muscle memory. Over time you get better and better at automatically incorporating all these things your mind/body have learned into a single action (on this case a punch).
The issue at hand is karate punches, but the same principle no doubt applies to any other kind of punch or even something like swinging a tennis racket.
But I do agree that it would be an interesting study to test veterans against guys with just a few years in the game.
