Re: UFC 121 Lesnar vs Velasquez

I don't know about "gassed" as in Shane Carwin gassed but he looked tired after his initial bull rush/exchange. When he had Cain up against the cage going for the TD...after that separated Brock took a big breath and dropped his hands. And Luke...earlier you said something about weight training vs cardio training..I doubt that is the case. In the Carwin fight he was just getting punched in the face/defending. In the Cain fight, he sprinted across the cage and did that whole crazy man thing while getting into quick exchanges and exchanging takedowns and scrambles. That mixed with adrenaline is going to have him way more tired then what happened in the Carwin fight. Brock also dropped about 20 lbs in his training camp, so it's not like he was focusing on lifting to keep his size.

I guess the question is why didn't he get his weight under control earlier? It is not like it was a short notice fight. He has made ww plenty of times before.

Dana White tells Brock Lesnar to toughen up his chin
            ESPN staff
            October 25, 2010

UFC president Dana White has told Brock Lesnar to improve his punch retention before making a quick return to the Octagon.

For the second successive fight, Lesnar was dropped and beaten up at UFC 121 as Cain Velasquez stole his UFC heavyweight title. Defeat comes on the back of a pounding from Shane Carwin, whom Lesnar eventually beat at UFC 116 after Carwin gassed himself out.

Clearly, despite getting the better of Randy Couture on his feet back in 2008, Lesnar can be penetrated when the fight remains vertical, which is a huge problem when the likes of Carwin and Velasquez can match the former WWE star's grappling background. White acknowledges the weakness, but he insists it is the chin - not the technique - that Lesnar most needs to improve.

"People were saying to me in the press conference 'he's got to work on his striking'," White told ESPN's MMA Live show. "His striking is fine when he's the one doing the punching. It's when he starts getting hit that his striking falls apart.

"This guy came from WWE wrestling, he's not used to getting punched in the face. He needs to work on sparring. It's about getting in the gym and sparring with guys who are really good."

And White appeared to hint at a sharp return for Lesnar, who has previously been used to fighting no more than twice in a year. A potential trilogy-completing clash with Frank Mir is a possibility, and White expects Saturday's defeat to produce the best Brock Lesnar yet.

"We're gonna find out the real competitive side to Brock Lesnar. He was planning on going on hunting, taking a bunch of time off, but I have a feeling from knowing him, he's gonna cut those plans short. He'll still go hunting and spend time with his family, but I think we'll see him a lot sooner than had been planned."

Somebody need to beat Dana's ass. Talking about Brock's chin? It worked pretty well for every fight he had... just stfu and leave the training to the trainers.

I agree, but I also think that Brock has shown an unusual aversion to being hit for a pro fighter. I mean, look at the sort of punishment that he took and compare it what Rothwell and Kongo took.

I also think now that if Carwin had been a little more methodical instead of just going crazy and hitting Brock's forearms that he would've been champ.

^ I am not saying it is wrong, just that Dana should not be talking about it. Dana should not be telling fighters what they need to work on, because he doesn't know shit. Brock vs. Dana, you can have Dana @ +1-zillion-million. It is one thing to berate fighters for not doing interviews, shitting on sponsors, etc. But Dana doesn't know shit about training and what Brock does to train. For all he knows, Brock was bare knuckle boxing with Vitali Klitchko to prepare his chin.

I also don't understand the UFC getting all mad at Shields. They're the one that wanted him at WW, IIRC, even though he'd stated numerous times he feels better at MW. He hadn't fought at 170 in over 2 years.

So a guy cut too much weight and looked like shit? Again, big surprise.

Ok, not mad, but you get comments like this from Dana

                            "That’s ridiculous to cut 20 pounds in a day. That’s stupid… "

Jake is slow and has awful penetration but once he gets in, Anderson would be going down and getting schooled. He's got a tough enough chin to take some shots too. I think Shields would make him look foolish.
