It was basic, but light-years ahead for the time, really.

I actually used to have an RBWI video series and Jennum was in it. When I saw it, I was like holy shit, that's Steve Jennum! And it was. He was there, basically getting beat up on by Robert Bussey.

Bussey is a pioneer, and really something of a legend, in martial arts. He originally trained in traditional ninjutsu, and even went to Japan to train. He then took this traditional base and updated it, adding in techniques from other martial arts and taking a more "modern" approach in general. His system that Jennum trained in wasn't heavily oriented toward grappling, but there would've been some basic stuff like hip tosses and armbars.

IIRC Jennum hit a hip toss in some fight too. The idea of integrating grappling and striking has been around forever, but no one really figured out how to train it effectively until these experts from different disciplines started collaborating...

In any event, I don't know a lot of martial arts history. I basically know a little about Jujititsu, Judo, and BJJ and that is it.

And yes, there have been combo-arts for hundreds of years. Even Kung Fu has Shuai Jiao, which is kung fu grappling. But we both know that during the 80s and early 90s you usually did one thing: boxing, karate, savate, muay Thai, etc. FWIW, Bruce Lee was ahead of the pack in the 70s.

Armlock definitely encompasses armbar, just as "submission" includes "armlock".

As for Delucia, you know there was a history there. Delucia already got his ass kicked by Royce once in Gracie Challenge match, then he did something-I can't remember what- that brazilians consider disrespectful... and so Royce gave him a little something to remember. Royce was/is a dick, not a fan of the way he handled himself.

I like kickboxing as well. I used to watch it all the time before MMA was on free tv all the time. I grew up wanting to be a ninja and stuff too... but I just like the tactical game of grappling better in actual practice.

From what I've read at least, DeLucia has always been respectful toward the Gracies. They consider all kinds of shit disrespectful though, so it doesn't surprise me. If you accidentally walked in front of a Gracie then they would challenge you to a fight. Unless it's Renzo. He's always seemed cool to me.

Oddly, I actually have always gotten bored with kickboxing. Not sure why. Just not dynamic enough, I guess. I used to watch ISKA stuff back in the day and was just kind of like, Eh. . .
