Baltimore Orioles at Los Angeles Angels (-137, 8.5)
The Baltimore Orioles’ road trip to face the class of the American League West continues Monday against the Los Angeles Angels, who opened the second half by taking two of three against Seattle. Baltimore dropped two of three in Oakland over the weekend, including a 10-2 loss Sunday when they managed just three hits. Center fielder Mike Trout has reached base safely in 57 of the last 62 games for Los Angeles, which has won 21 of its last 26.
Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado has recovered from a slow start and reached base safely in a career-high 19 games since June 22. The Orioles, who entered the All-Star break in first place for the second time in the last 25 seasons, saw its lead in the American League East cut to three games over the New York Yankees and Toronto following Sunday’s loss. The Angels feature the majors’ top-scoring offense, and their bullpen received a boost Saturday with the trade for new closer Huston Street from San Diego.

LINE HISTORY: Pinnacle Sports opened the Angels as -137 faves, then moved to -141 before back to -137. The total has held at 8.5.

WHAT SHARPS SAY: “Series losses have been few and far between for the Orioles lately, but they’re coming off one as they dropped two of three in Oakland. Baltimore has still been a solid bet on the road this season, where it sits five games over .500 and this spot actually sets up well as Angels starter Matt Shoemaker isn’t nearly as strong as his 7-2 record indicates (note his 4.38 ERA). As a team, Los Angeles is probably in line for some regression moving forward. Not a bad spot to grab the underdog price with an excellent club here.” Sean Murphy.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Bud Norris (7-6, 3.96 ERA) vs. Angels RH Matt Shoemaker (7-2, 4.38)
Norris is making his first start in nearly three weeks after landing on the disabled list with a groin strain. The 29-year-old, who went 4-0 with a 2.55 ERA in four June starts, allowed three runs over 4 1/3 innings last Monday in a rehab assignment for Double-A Bowie. David Freese is 7-for-18 against Norris, who is 3-0 with a 0.32 ERA in four career starts covering 28 innings against the Angels.
Shoemaker is set to appear in his first game since July 7, when he allowed two runs over 3 2/3 innings in relief against Toronto. The 27-year-old rookie has shuffled between the bullpen and the rotation, and is 6-1 with a 4.15 ERA in nine starts while posting a 5.40 ERA in six relief appearances. Shoemaker, who is facing Baltimore for the first time, has gone 4-1 with a 2.84 in nine games (five starts) at home.
TRENDS:
* Orioles are 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* Under is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.
* Orioles are 4-1 in Norris’ last five starts.
* Angels are 5-1 in Shoemakers last six starts.
CONSENSUS: 63.24 percent of wagers on Consensus are on the Angels.
Looking to make some profit with this play today. This weekend was not profitable as two games came up on the short end of the stick. Today's game is between the Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Detroit Tigers had been in a funk on offense for 5 out of the last 6 games. With a win against Cleveland Sunday night, they may have woke up finally. Justin Verlander will head to the hill to make another road start. Verlander's last outing was in KC in a game which Detroit lost and only scored 2 runs. Verlander has had a down year. 8-8 this year with a ERA of 4.81..and a WHIP 1.45. These numbers are not Verlander type of numbers. I think he has been due for a regression for a time, and now he has to come to terms with it.
The Arizona Diamondback will put Vidal Nuno on the mound at home and you can expect him to maybe have some trouble. His numbers rival some of Verlander's as he supports a 5.10 ERA and a WHIP of 1.30. His record is 2-6 and struggles against good lineups. Arizona has looked like a better team in the last few weeks.
Not sure how much of Mark Trumbo we will see tomorrow as he has come back an seen limited action the last few games.
Overall both these teams pitchers are going to be looked at as fresh meat. AZ wants everything to do with taking advantage of a pitcher such as Verlander. Teams love to see a dominate pitcher like Verlander be vulnerable for once. They will be swinging away tomorrow. Detroit has to be salty over the results the last week. After a nice win yesterday, the offense got rolling and i'm sure they will continue against a pitcher like Nuno. I think we see some runs here in AZ and i think a play on the OVER is correct.
