    Re: Off topic thread(basketball,movies,etc whatever)

Karate Kid 1 is a good movie. It has been so played out by popular culture that it has lost its magic. But if you can get yourself back to the place where you had never seen it, you would get chills when Daniel whips out the crane kick. Marial arts aside, it has some classic lines that will never die. Any movie that has contributed so much to society cannot be discounted. Don't hate.

Its an alternate universe where our childhood fantasy is real. Karate is cool and people care about a karate tournament. The bad guys are karate guys that ride dirt bikes and rock a headband. That movie was good, and I will NEVER see the "remake." It doesn't need to be remade.

      I miss the 80s.

And yes, I always noticed, at the very least, that everyone cared about this Karate tournament. It wasn't some obscure shit, but rather something that the whole valley was completely into, like a championship high school football game.

That's the way it should be.

I think the two movies exist independently. You can tell that, for the remake, they are using the same general framework of the original, but they're really very different movies. More of a re-imagining than a re-make.

Personally, I thought the new one was pretty cool, and didn't see it as trying to be some sort of replacement for the original.

As a stand alone movie, if there were no Karate Kid co-starring Elizabeth Shue, i can say with utmost certainty that I would not be drawn to see this movie.

So as an independently existing movie, it does not entice.

The thing is, The Karate Kid was already remade just over a year ago. It was called Never Back Down.

I would say that the original Karate Kid was more of a teen movie, and this is more of a tween movie.

I can see why an adult might not be interested in it, but I like kids movies sometimes so I was down with it. A lot of critics have given it high marks as well. Will Smith's kid is just okay, but I typically don't like young male actors anyway, so it's no surprise I wasn't really drawn to his performance. But everyone else does a good job, the locations and cinematography are really nice, and the tournament at the end is actually pretty exciting with a lot of well-choreographed action.

another movie I did not see (thank god) and yet somehow intuitevely know that it is utter garbage not worthy of the 30 seconds I spent on the commercial.

I like some kid's movies. But I just wish they wouldn't use the Karate Kid name on this one.

Of course, The Karate Kid franchise already shit on its own name 3 times. One time, it shit on its own name so hard that they couldn't even get Daniel san to do the movie. They had to get Mo Chuisle to do it.

Never Back Down wasn't horrible. The fight scenes were actually pretty well done and the MMA techniques were legit.

There is nothing you can say that will convince me that that movie wasn't totally retarded. MTV crap to cash in on MMA's surge. I know it was crap.

From what I heard, some of the people attached to the project didn't want to use the Karate Kid name, but the producer (Jerry Weintraub, who also produced the original) insisted that they use the name. Personally, I think they could've called it The Kung Fu Kid and just explicitly stated that it was a reimagining of Karate Kid in media reports.

I thought Part II was pretty good and I at least liked Part III when I was younger. I still remember, "If a man can't SEE . . . he can't FIGHT!"

Part IV was terrible, but Daniel-san was too damn old to do another one anyway. In fact, I read that the reason Daniel's relationship with the girl in Part III never really turned romantic was because by that point he was something like 29 in real life and she was 17 and they thought it would just be weird to have him kissing her and shit.

You probably would've thought so. I wouldn't buy it or anything, but I did go to the theater to see it and I thought it was okay. I like a lot of teen movies anyway, though.

                          unfortunately, I did.

I was looking forward to that movie... here is David Mamet, a legitimate writer who is also a an avid bjj practioner. I do not understand how teh same guy that wrote Glen Garry Glen Ross, wrote Red Belt. Why did he have to mess up the movie by making the plot so ridiculous? All the pieces were there. Enson Enoue, it even had Dan Inosanto... but then, it sucked so bad.

Interesting. I actually thought it was pretty good. It was not perfect, but pretty good. I didn't like the shit about someone having an arm tied up or whatever.

I enjoyed it overall, even if it wasn't everything I hoped it would be.
