Re: UFC 121 Lesnar vs Velasquez

          Official old school breakdown #2. . .

          Cote vs Lawlor

Lawlor is a fighter with plenty of potential. He can wrestle, he has submission skills, and he can box. The problem is that he's only good for one round and maybe the first minute for whatever rounds come after that. Look at his fights: The CB fight was brief enough to where Lawlor was able to come in, do work, and go home. In the Simpson fight, Lawlor put a hellacious ass-whipping on Simpson in the first round (maybe even a 10-8) and actually did well in the second round, too. But by the third, he was about ready to be taken out on a stretcher. And in the Doerksen fight we saw a similar pattern: awesome for one round, and then falls apart afterward. This may be in large part due to the fact that he goes all berserker in the first round in an attempt to finish the fight and leaves nothing left for a backup plan. But whatever the reason, it is what it is.

For a fighter who had had a long injury layoff, Cote came back against Belcher and did not look bad. I've been on the Belcher bandwagon for a little while now, and while Cote could not deal with his diversified attack, he at least looked as good as Cote usually looks. Also, cardio-wise he seemed in top shape, coming out as fresh in the second round as he was in the first. And while he is primarily known as a striker with a heavy right hand, Cote has actually shown some fairly well-rounded skills of his own. He has demonstrated takedown and submission skills, and does a good job keeping control of his opponents against the cage.

I like Lawlor and would wish for him to get a win against most opponents. Both guys have gone 0-2 and need this one desperately. Lawlor could possibly win the first round if he comes in with his usual aggressive attack, but I doubt he gets the sub and it's extremely unlikely that he will be able to knock Cote out, when Cote has never been knocked out in his entire career despite having taken shots from harder hitters like Leben and Silva. However, if Lawlor DOES win, it will be via submission (most likely) or by decision-via-wrestling. In the end, though, I think that Cote is going to be too experienced and will get the W here after surviving the first round and attacking a tired Lawlor in the second and third, possibly getting the (T)KO along the way.

          My bet: 2u on Cote @ -165

Yeah I am leaning towards Ortiz, he fought a good fight with Machida and Rashad and him fought to a draw. He did fine against Forrest he just gassed in the third round, I'm not sure that will happen this time.

^^^^ I rewatched his last fight with Forrest and think he should have got the decision in that fight.

Well for me Tito is the better wrestler and better striker its just what does he have left . Hamills striking is so bad I think Tito will be fine . Ortiz gassed after 2 rounds against Forrest but Forrest fights at a faster pace than Hamill does so I think Tito will be fine .

I disagree. I remember being surprised it was even a split. I thought Forrest won convincingly.

I'd have to rewatch it again, but I don't even remember Ortiz doing much in that fight except getting some takedowns.

Yeah pretty easy 29-28 Forrest IMO. Forrest took the 1st, the 2nd was really close, and the 3rd was completely one-sided for Forrest.

Tito hadn't fought in 14 or so months. That is why he gassed. I don't expect to see him gas here. I think Tito wins via more experience. Hamil is kind of raw to me.

I would bet on Tito if it were not for his neck surgery. If i understand correctly he actually had a cervical fusion. That is a serious surgery. He shouldn't even be playing basketball... I can't believe he got cleared to fight.

To make matters worse, Hammill goes for the front headlock in every fight. If Tito shoots in and ends up in that front headlock with his neck fused together, I am afraid he is going to get paralyzed or something. For a guy who claims to have money, fighting after a recent cervical fusion is risking a lot for no good reason.

Hammill by Tito getting injured in the first round and then looking like shit for the rest of the fight and then telling Rogan he is was not 100%.
