An armlock that hyperflexes or hyperrotates the shoulder joint is referred to as a shoulder lock, and an armlock that hyperextends the elbow joint is called an armbar2015 MMA BETTING CHAMP

That is a straight up arm bar or juji gatame. it was sloppy as hell and telegraphed (actually it is shocking he was able to do that in UFC 4... I mean look how much space there is) but it is supposed to be an armbar.
It is really amazing that a guy with really rudimentary skills like Jennum was able to beat that boxer guy. I am sure he wasn't a great boxer, but Jennum was a whitebelt on the ground, he didn't come from a wrestling or judo base, and his striking was sloppy too...2012: +19.33

Is an armbar an armlock? In the general sense. But if a motherfucker has someone in an armbar, you say he has an armbar, you don't say he has an armlock.
That's the same as saying calling an uppercut a punch.I heart cockComment

FWIW "juji gatame" means "cross armlock". I think what we call an arm bar is the bjj nomenclature for that specific move. Maybe it had not been fully adopted yet at the time. In any event, the move Jennum was doing was definitely the juji gatame or armbar from mount.2012: +19.33

As for Jennum, I'm not sure what you know about him, but I know that he came from the RBWI (Robert Bussey's Warrior International) camp, and I actually respect the shit out of Robert Bussey. He was actually one of the first people back in the 80s to develop a well-rounded system that involved both striking and grappling elements. He wasn't the first or the only one, but at a time where one-dimensional traditional martial arts were the norm, he was actually something of a pioneer.I heart cockComment

Yeah, but read the shit. It classifies the "armbar"--or juji-gatame--as an armlock. So clearly that article is using "armlock" to mean any technique that attacks the arm, not some specific move.

Word. I was wondering how long it was going to take you to chime in.
I think Bowen was actually considered a pretty decent boxer and may have even captured some sort of belt at some point. Not sure though.

I don't know anything about him, but his grappling is really basic, like a guy that watched the moves but didn't have very many reps in. Not knocking him, but compared to the wrestlers and Royce, he was way behind in any one area. But I was more just marveling at how much just a little bit of well roundedness could get you back then (and for self defense).2012: +19.33
