By the same token Paulo got dismantled by a barely top 15 guy in Kampmann and it looked EASY.

I actually think Kampmann is highly underrated. Also, Sherdog has him ranked #6 right now.

He's 17-3 (with one of those losses via cut) and would almost certainly be 18-2 if he hadn't tried to prove something against Daley. The guy is extremely versatile, with solid (if not outstanding) technical striking and an above average ground game. I think the Paulo/Kampmann fight said a lot more about Kampmann than it did Paulo. I would not hold the loss against him too much.

He might have better finishing skills, but Diego is an underrated grappler. He is a legit Saulo Ribiero blackbelt, which says a lot. Even before he trained with Saulo he hung in there against Marcelo in ADCC. He has never been out of position once in any fight I have seen. Never had his guard passed that I remember. Diego also has pretty good wrestling. I think it will be a positional battle IF they come in wanting to grapple.

The references I can find list Sanchez as a brown belt, but I'll trust your estimation of his skills from video. He does seem to be a solid wrestler.

Aside: I had totally forgotten that his TUF competition where he beat Florian was at Middleweight.

I see tbe standup at about even. Sub edge I don't know, though It sounds as though Diego is legit and that is what i have always heard. Wrestling I would think goes to Diego though..that will probably be the difference.

I guess I have nightmares about how absolutely ineffective Diego was in the Hathaway fight to have much faith in him right now.

Yeah, the beating BJ put on Diego mentally broke him I think. Diego didn't look like himself at all in the Hathaway fight, and this is before he ate that big knee.

You are right. I thought I remembered seeing a Diego blackbelt promotion thread, but I guess it was a Brown belt promotion thread. Still, he started with Saulo as a white belt, after already having his BB from Greg Jackson and years after the Marcelo thing. I think he is pretty good at least defensively. He doesn't show a very dynamic offense or sweeps game, but his wrestling is decent (he was a HS State champ). Paulo's size and judo may allow him to get top position though, so I think it will be close.

Paulo's striking seems kind of unconventional, he doesn't look like the most skilled guy. However he has a lot of power. Diego doesn't seem like he has a lot of skill in the striking either though.

Now that I think about it, Paulo prob has the grappling/wrestling advantage. Not with takedowns, but with the ability to stop Diegos. He did stop Volkmann for the most part..
